Students acquire knowledge of carcinogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, treatment modalities and psychosocial aspects of the complex oncological care as well as they get acquainted with most of cancer types and their specifics. Apart from acquiring the oncological knowledge the course focuses on the crucial communication and social skills, attitudes and values that are important in the contact with the oncological patient.

The course is a part of the 5th year´s curriculum and takes 2 weeks. Seminars will be held at 5 different oncology departments of the First Faculty of Medicine according to schedule.

Dear Medical Students,

our first Course (study groups 5051 and 5052) will start on Monday 16nd October at 9 a.m. at the lecture hall at Fakultní poliklinika (FP) in VFN -  Karlovo náměstí 32, building  A - middle part, door no. P.21

!!! Please notice that Monday and Friday lectures are identical for both study groups, whereas a rotation of odd/even groups (i.e.  5053 is odd, 5054 even) is performed from Tuesday to Thursday - as specified in a detailed timetable below.

Timetable Modification: Study Group No 5051 and 5052: Friday 20 October: Lessons start already at 8 o'clock and Monday 23 October: Lessons start at 9 o'clock (later).

Please notice that some lessons start at 8 or 8,30 AM !!! 

Students gain CREDIT on the basis of their attendance and results of the online credit test in Moodle - link: B80120: Oncology Credit Test (cuni.cz).

The key for student registration is the code of the subject: "B80120"

EXAM could be taken either at a "pre-date slot" (available only for those who have just finished the current course - usually in 2  following weeks)  or at a "regular exam slot" during exam period at the end of winter or summer semester (available for anybody).

The exam can be held on-line via MS Teams but only under some very special circumstances and by prior arrangement.

1. Primary and secondary prevention, screening in oncology - definition, theory of successful screening, screening in the clinical practice
2. Tumour epidemiology - descriptive and analytical epidemiology, regional differences in cancer incidence and mortality, epidemiological studies, hereditary cancer syndromes
3. Biology of cancer growth - overview of carcinogenesis, radiation, chemical and viral carcinogenesis, cell cycle and its dysregulation in cancer, biology of metastasis.
4. Molecular biology in oncology - oncogenes, tumour-suppressor genes, oncoproteins, gene therapy
5. Medical history and physical examination in oncology - specific aspects, symptoms and signs of malignancies, hereditary cancer syndromes
