Cíl předmětu -

The goal of the course is to develop students’ ability to critically read original scientific articles and summarize their content in a structured, concise, and scientifically accurate form. Students will learn how to identify key elements of research papers, understand scientific communication standards, and practice writing scientific summaries in English with guidance from editors.

Podmínky zakončení předmětu -

Each student must submit one final, editor-approved scientific summary based on an original research article.

The original research article that serves as the basis for the summary must be published no more than 6 months prior to its selection, unless otherwise approved by the assigned editor (e.g. due to exceptional scientific value or novelty).

The summary must be written in English and follow the provided structure and stylistic guidelines.

The final version must be submitted via Moodle (PDF or DOCX format) by the end of Month 3 of the semester (i.e. December in the winter semester / May in the summer semester).

Active and timely communication with the assigned editor is required throughout the writing and revision process.

Only the final, revised, editor-approved version will be evaluated for course credit.

Metody výuky -

The course is based on self-directed work supported by editorial mentorship. Students independently select an original research article (published within the last 6 months) and write a structured scientific summary in English. Communication with an assigned editor is essential and may take place via email, MS Teams, or other agreed-upon channels. Editors provide iterative feedback on both content and language. Students are supported by written guidelines and optional video tutorials (e.g., on PubMed use or understanding impact factor and quartiles). The process emphasizes autonomy, critical reading, and precise scientific writing.

Sylabus -

The entire syllabus is organized through individual communication between the student and their assigned editor. While the course is based on self-directed work, students will learn how to search for original scientific papers, understand journal metrics (such as impact factor and quartiles), and write clear and structured scientific summaries in English.

Month 1 of the semester: Students are assigned an editor who introduces the course objectives and provides guidelines. If a student is not contacted during this month (due to technical or organizational reasons), it is their obligation to initiate communication with the course coordinator or a designated editor.

Month 2 of the semester: Students select an appropriate original research article (no older than 6 months) and begin drafting their summary. Regular communication with the editor takes place during this period, focusing on both content and language development.

Month 3 of the semester: Students finalize and submit their revised summary to Moodle, or via an alternative platform specified by the editor. Only editor-approved summaries are considered for course completion.
