This course will provide basic understanding of the teachings and practices of Buddhism. We will learn about various concepts, practices and traditions of Buddhism. We will begin our quest from the historical Buddha, the founder of the religion and follow the geographical dissemination and historical development of the teaching. We will be reading introductory texts on the religion, English translations of the primary texts and secondary studies of Buddhist traditions. |

The objectives of the course are threefold. Students who will successfully take the course should have a general knowledge of the development of the teaching, be able to understand the basic concepts and beliefs of the teaching and be aware of contemporary trends in the Buddhist studies. They should also understand the various aspects of religious life of a Buddhist. |

1) Regular attendance and preparation (reading). 2) Submitting a reflective question or commentary based on what we learned or what you read in the previous lesson or lessons (through the Moodle system by Wednesday noon). 3) An open-book online exam based on the course content and course readings (January 11, 2018). 4) A paper (1600-2000words) submitted by January 31, 2018 through the Moodle system. The paper topic is to be discussed and approved by the tutor. |
