The course is designed to introduce students to some of the crucial concepts, approaches and debates in the fast-growing field of sound studies. We will discuss various theorizations of listening and the ear in relation to other senses, different ways of analyzing the role of sound in (Western) culture both present and past, and the role of media and technology in shaping our acoustic landscapes and auditory experiences.

Students are expected to engage in depth with the assigned readings and participate in class discussion. Each student will participate in one online group presentation and write one paper on a topic of their choosing.
