FALL TERM 2024
BA module+Erasmus Wednesday, 9:10-10:45, room 225 (in English) e-mail me for consultation or questions: anna.tropia@ff.cuni.cz General description What does it mean philosophy in the 13th century? What are its tasks, its themes, and its protagonists? Answers to these questions will be provided by the reading of some works (both philosophical and poetical) by the Italian poet and thinker Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Differently than the scholastic philosophers, whose names are usually identified (still nowadays!) with medieval philosophy – Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, William of Ockham –, Dante was a layman, and did not follow a regular and complete academic path. Yet he studied philosophy and engaged himself in an active dialogue with the philosophical discussion of his day. Through the reading of parts of the Convivio and the most famous masterpiece, the Commedia, we will try to define the concept of philosophy which he develops as well as to trace back to a scholastic framework questions and solutions to the philosophical problems Dante discusses: the relation between philosophy and theology, the goal of human life, the essence of a human being, and her place in the universe.
