This course examines how language shapes, directs, and constrains public opinion, with particular attention to the role of framing. We will explore how framing structures our perception of social and political issues and how it interacts with other linguistic strategies — from carefully crafted metaphors and strategic synonymy to seemingly minor choices such as the replacement of one preposition with another. Through these examples, students will learn to recognize the subtle mechanisms through which language influences the way individuals and societies interpret the world. The aim of the course is to develop students’ sensitivity to manipulative language practices and to help them understand how such strategies shape public opinion. Students will also learn to apply narrative and linguistic tools effectively in order to craft credible, coherent, and persuasive representations of themselves and the world they inhabit. The course is completed with a pass. To obtain the pass, students must give a presentation at the mini‑conference, which will take place during the final seminar session on May 18. Depending on the number of enrolled students, we will determine the length of the presentations and whether they will be delivered individually or in teams. In all cases, the presentation must include an electronic slide presentation of an appropriate length. Poslední úprava: Huleja Jan, PhDr., Ph.D. (05.02.2026)
