Ing. Antonin Komenda, PhD.: Meandair - Routing aircraft around bad weather

Aircraft pilots often use instruments and applications helping them with flying around adverse weather phenomenons. The classical techniques include weather briefing ahead of the flight in a form of numerical weather predictions, and onboard Doppler weather radars. The modern ones are based on mobile devices providing interactive visualization of rudimentary offline weather. 
In Meandair, our mission is to provide the pilots more: interactive 3D image of the current weather situation and prediction of the weather in 3D for their flight. We develop fast algorithms to compute various weather phenomenons and visualize them to the pilots via existing mobile applications. In long term, we are aiming not lower than using techniques of Artificial Intelligence to support the pilots with automated flight planning and weather prediction using deep learning techniques.

Mgr. Patrik Benáček: Observation error characteristics of ATOVS instruments in numerical weather prediction

Meteorological satellites are currently one of the most significant types of observation in numerical forecasting. In order to get the best linear unbiased estimate of analysis, we are supposed to have a precise knowledge of observation errors. In fact, the observation errors are never known and must be approximated. The method used in our study is the Desroziers method based on covariances derived from pairs of observation-minus-model differences. This presentation reports the results for the Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) that are obtained in the ALADIN model system.

How not to die in an avalanche

Avalanches are very dangerous and in the Alps, they cause about 100 fatalities each year, especially in uncontrolled terrains outside settlements and transportation corridors. For visitors (people doing e.g. hiking, mountaineering, ski-touring), it is crucial to know how to evaluate the avalanche risk according to meteorological conditions and parameters of the terrain. In this talk I would like to i) explain the main factors which lead to the avalanche falls; ii) give some practical advice how to avoid it; and finally, iii) describe the rescue plan for the case when the avalanche falls.

Report from the Urban Physics Winter School in Switzerland

In the beginning of February I participated the Urban Physics Winter School in Ascona (Switzerland) organized by ETH Zürich. This winter school was very well organized and I found the topics suitable and interesting for most of the students from our department. This contribution will be a short advertisement for the next year of the winter school.


Mgr. Michal Žák, Ph.D.: Grosswetterlagen analysed with CM SAF data

Typing of synoptic weather situations ("Grosswetterlage") has a long tradition in the Czech Republic, it’s available (on a daily basis) since 1947. The knowledge of the synoptic type is important for the forecaster, even though he has many outputs of the numerical weather models available nowadays. The typing is based on pressure field configuration but there is no information e.g. about cloudiness and/or sunshine duration. In my presentation, the results of analysis based on satellite CM SAF (Climate Monitoring on Satellite Application Facility) will show the temporal and spatial variability of cloudiness and sunshine duration/ global radiation in the region of the central Europe/Czech Republic with a connection to “Grosswetterlagen”. Long term changes will be partly discussed, too.

Antonín Baďura: Simulation of wind flow through an urban environment using nested grids. Anotace:
It is often not possible to run high-resolution simulations of wind flow through an urban environment due to insufficient computing power, nevertheless there is a method which can improve the precision of simulations substantially at the price of a small increase of a computing load. This method is called a domain nesting. Within this project, several simulations were conducted in the area of a virtual city Michelstadt and were statistically evaluated comparing nested and not-nested grids.

Zuzana Procházková: Study of Microclimate of Boubín Forest

Wide researches of American old-growth forests have shown that virgin forest can mitigate extremes in summer and winter. This could contribute to preservation of ecosystems that are endangered by the global climate changes. Better understanding of the virgin-forest climate can help us predict the future development. In this project we processed temperature data from old-growth forest Boubín and compared them with data from surrounding forests and meteorological sites. The analysis has shown that the same trend observed abroad can be detected even in our climatic zone.

Anežka Doležalová: Satellite as an alternative of radar

Exploring the possibilities of using data measured by satellites instead of radar data. Determining suitable software processing options.
