      Entrance examination: single round, oral interview

      Content and subject matter of entrance examination; in accordance with the submitted dissertation project, the entrance examination will be conducted in German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Dutch, or Finnish, and it will be held remotely via video conference (source material for discussion is based on the mandatory attachments provided by the applicant):

        a) Discussion of submitted proposal for PhD dissertation (topic, conceptual focus and methodological approach of the dissertation project, applicant's problem solving ability regarding the project's research and self-sufficiency in research activities in general, comprehensive understanding of secondary literature relating to the proposed dissertation project, practical realization of the project etc.): 0–30 points
        b) Assessment of the applicant’s previous research, and other academic activities: 0–15 points
        c) Assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of secondary literature: 0–15 points

        Part of the application for a doctoral study programme accredited in a non-Czech-language are following mandatory attachments (applicants must state their first and last name, name of the study programme they are applying for, and title of the submitted project for a prepared dissertation in the header of a first page of every mandatory attachment):

        a) project for a prepared dissertation in the range of 3–5 standard pages; the topic of the dissertation project is selected by the applicant from the areas or topics specified in the information system or the applicant chooses the topic individually; the chosen topic is consulted in advance by the applicant with the chair of the relevant subject-area board or the contact person specified in the academic requirements for individual study programmes (section 16 RAS), the name of the consultant is then stated in the project;

        b) structured curriculum vitae;

        c) list of literature corresponding to the study programme;

        d) overview of existing academic activities (publication activities, internships, etc.);

        e) proof of language competence, i.e. scan of any of the following documents of language competence in the foreign language in which the study programme is accredited: secondary school-leaving examination with a curriculum realised in the relevant foreign language; proof of completion of any university degree programme accredited in the relevant foreign language; proof of successful completion of any certified examination in the relevant foreign language at B2 level or higher according to the list in the appendix to these Requirements, proof of completion of a language examination in the relevant foreign language at B2 level or higher, completed as part of any university course; for graduates of the Faculty of Arts or other faculties of Charles University, a relevant document generated from the information system may be submitted instead of a certified copy. The list of language certificates recognised by the University is attached to these Requirements. Along with the language in which the study programme is accredited, courses might be conducted in a language logically related to the given study programme or the dissertation project. In such cases, language competence in a related language is examined during the entrance examination (section 16 RAS).

        Beschreibung der Aufnahmeprüfung: Entsprechend der Ausrichtung des vorgelegten Dissertationsprojekts findet die Prüfung in Deutsch, Dänisch, Norwegisch, Schwedisch, Niederländisch oder Finnisch statt; sie wird fernübertragen in Form einer Videokonferenz durchgeführt (als Grundlage dienen die Anlagen, die die Bewerberin/der Bewerber verpflichtend dem Bewerbungsantrag beigefügt hat):

          a) Fachliche Diskussion zum vorgelegten Dissertationsvorhaben (thematischer, konzeptioneller und methodologischer Ansatz des Dissertationsprojekts, Kompetenz der Bewerberin/des Bewerbers zur Umsetzung des Projekts und allgemein zur selbstständigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit, Überblick über die Fachliteratur zum vorgeschlagenen Projekt, praktische Umsetzbarkeit des Projekts u. Ä.): 0–30 Punkte;
          b) Bewertung der bisherigen fachbezogenen Täigkeit und des bisherigen Studiums: 0–15 Punkte;
          c) Kenntnis der Forschungsliteratur zum Thema: 0–15 Punkte

          Nachweis über Sprachkompetenzen, d. h. ein Scan eines der folgenden Nachweise über die Sprachkompetenz in der Fremdsprache, in der das Studienprogramm akkreditiert ist, ist ein verpflichtender Bestandteil der Bewerbung: Abiturzeugnis mit Schwerpunktfach in der betreffenden Fremdsprache; Nachweis über den Abschluss eines beliebigen Hochschulstudienprogramms, das in der betreffenden Fremdsprache akkreditiert ist; Nachweis über das erfolgreiche Absolvieren einer zertifizierten Prüfung in der betreffenden Fremdsprache auf dem Niveau B2 oder höher gemäß der Liste im Anhang dieser Bedingungen; Nachweis über das Absolvieren einer Sprachprüfung in der betreffenden Fremdsprache auf dem Niveau B2 oder höher im Rahmen eines beliebigen Hochschulstudiums. Für Absolventinnen und Absolventen der Philosophischen Fakultät oder anderer Fakultäten der Karls-Universität kann anstelle einer beglaubigten Kopie ein entsprechendes Dokument aus dem Informationssystem eingereicht werden. Eine Liste der anerkannten Sprachzertifikate ist im Anhang der Zulassungsbedingungen enthalten.

          The graduate of Germanic and Nordic Languages and Literatures is a highly educated expert who is qualified for research in his/her field, i. e., in Germanic and Nordic linguistics or literatures. He/she is ready for scholarly work and further growth in the academic area. He/she is able to manage language and literary problems where language skills and philological work are required, or where the theory and history of an individual literature in all its linguistic and historical-cultural contexts are needed. The graduate can be active in the media, in state administration, in cultural management and wherever a high degree of philological and literary knowledge is required in an interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective.
