      This study programme is implemented as part of the Voice Communication Sciences (VoCS) project (https://fonetika.ff.cuni.cz/en/research/current-projects/vocs/).

      The language of instruction is English. The annual tuition fee is 25,000 CZK.

      Entrance examination: single round – oral interview

      Content and subject matter of entrance examination

      1. Discussion of submitted proposal for PhD dissertation (with the discussion focusing on the topic of the prospective doctoral dissertation and testing the candidate’s research skills): 0–30 points
      2. Assessment of the applicant’s previous studies, research, and other academic activities: 0–15 points
      3. Assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of secondary literature (based on the list submitted by the applicant): 0–15 points

      Applicants for doctoral studies should use their dissertation proposal to demonstrate a specific vision for their own future research as well as skills in independent research. Specifically, applicants must show an awareness of publications related to the proposed dissertation project, including publications in English, and present potential methodological approaches appropriate to their dissertation project. They must further understand the deeper connections between their project and other subdisciplines in phonetics.

      The dissertation proposal must be 6–12 standard pages long and must contain a theoretical framework including references to secondary literature, an outline of research questions and proposed research methods, expected benefits of the research and a proposed time schedule of the dissertation project.

      Recommended dissertation topics: The dissertation topic will be based on the research projects of the Department and the applicant’s previous studies.  

      The deadline for submission of applications for the English-language Phonetics study programme, which is implemented as part of the Voice Communication Sciences (VoCS) programme is 31/03/2025.

      Graduates have in-depth theoretical knowledge of the key areas related to the description of human speech and the sound patterns of Czech; in the area of the dissertation, they are very well acquainted with the current state-of-the-arts, which includes the knowledge of both primary and secondary sources. They are able to reflect upon their branch of study against the background of general linguistic description of language. Graduates are able to pursue professional scientific work at an international level and make effective use of tools for phonetic analysis and statistical data processing, corresponding to their area of expertise. The doctoral programme enables graduates to work as researchers and university teachers, or in the specific area related to their dissertation.
