Entrance examination: single round – oral interview

Entrance examinations for all applicants will be held remotely via video conference.

Content and subject matter of entrance examination:

      1. Discussion of submitted proposal for PhD dissertation: 0–35 points
      2. Assessment of the applicant’s previous studies, research, and other academic activities (successful master’s thesis, publications, projects etc.): 0–15 points
      3. Assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of an Asian language to test whether their knowledge is sufficient to allow for successful completion of the dissertation project: 0–10 points

Applicants for the PhD programme must demonstrate an excellent grounding in the field in addition to a clear vision of their future work. In order to succeed in the programme, applicants must have sufficient knowledge of the relevant Asian language to allow them to complete the dissertation project (i.e. ability to use the language to read and analyse written documents, do independent field research, read secondary literature and communicate with other scholars).

Applicants must submit a dissertation proposal as part of their application. The dissertation proposal is a brief introduction into the primary documents to be used as well as secondary literature. During the entrance examination, the proposal is discussed to test the applicant’s knowledge of the fundamental theoretical concepts of the field and grounding in topics related to the prospective dissertation project.

A further purpose of the interview is to test language competence (the applicant is asked to read and translate a short text in the relevant language). In addition, the examining board assesses the applicant’s academic background, including previous studies, practical experience or, where appropriate, the list of publications in the field or related disciplines.
