The curriculum of Contemporary European Cultural History is the only historical field in the Czech Republic that expresses the theme of cultural history at the European level. It is not just a narrow sense of the history of culture, because the cultural component is perceived today as an essential aspect of many other areas of historiography: for example, the role of cultural discourse in political history, the question of political struggles for cultural domination or, on the contrary, autonomy. Czech society has great deficits in knowledge and alignment with the knowledge of its contemporary history in European comparison. Thus, the study program of Contemporary European History wants to contribute to the strengthening of the European accents of "civic historical literacy". The program is designed in such a way that its graduate is ready for independent research work in the field and is able to work professionally in the academic world. The "Europeanity" of accreditation is emphasized by emphasizing the linguistic competence of the applicants, and the curriculum includes the obligation to study abroad.


Der Studiengang Zeitgenössische Europäische Kulturgeschichte ist bisher der einzige Geschichtsstudiengang in der Tschechischen Republik, der sich explizit mit zeitgenössischer Kulturgeschichte beschäftigt, und zwar auf europäischer Ebene. Dabei handelt es sich nicht nur um Kulturgeschichte im engeren Sinne, denn die kulturelle Komponente wird heute als wesentlicher Aspekt vieler anderer Bereiche der Geschichtsschreibung wahrgenommen: Dazu gehören zum Beispiel die Rolle des kulturellen Diskurses in der politischen Geschichte, die Frage nach politischen Kämpfen um kulturelle Dominanz oder umgekehrt um Autonomie. Die tschechische Gesellschaft hat große Defizite im Wissen und im Umgang mit dem Wissen über ihre Zeitgeschichte im europäischen Vergleich. Der Studiengang Zeitgenössische Europäische Kulturgeschichte will deshalb auch dazu beitragen, die europäischen Akzente der „bürgerlichen Geschichtsbildung“ zu stärken. Der Studiengang ist so angelegt, dass seine Absolventinnen und Absolventen auf eine eigenständige Forschungsarbeit im Feld vorbereitet und zu einer beruflichen Tätigkeit im akademischen Bereich befähigt werden. Die „Europäizität“ der Akkreditierung wird durch die Betonung der Sprachkompetenz der Kandidaten unterstrichen, und das Curriculum sieht ein Auslandsstudium vor.

The oral entrance examination consists of a debate on the dissertation project (max. 10 points), a test of basic orientation in the field (max. 5 points) and a test of knowledge of foreign languages (max. 5 points). In the admission procedure, the candidate must demonstrate a distinct research interest in contemporary history at the Czech and European level and adequate knowledge of theory and methodology. Candidates will prepare an oral presentation on the project of no more than 10 minutes. The interview questions verify the candidate's suitability for the dissertation project and focus in particular on the chosen topic of the research project. Both the quality of the research project and its inclusion in the research projects carried out by the faculty are assessed. A total of 20 points can be obtained in the entrance examination. A candidate who scores less than 5 points in the evaluation of the debate on the dissertation research project cannot be admitted. The Dean will set the score threshold for admission based on the result of the admission procedure and taking into account the economic and capacity possibilities of the Faculty.

The following attachments are part of the application form:
- dissertation project (recommended parts: outline of the research problem and research questions, overview of the current state of research, explanation of the chosen methodology and research techniques, proposed approach to the problem, list of relevant literature, research timetable, explanation of the relevance of the topic to the study programme Contemporary European Cultural History); the usual length of the project is 10 pages; the project must include a proposal of the supervisor (name), selected from the list of supervisors approved by the departmental board, and the project must be developed together with the supervisor;
- a written agreement from the supervisor to supervise the dissertation project, which will be included in the application form as a separate annex;
- a brief professional CV;
- an overview of the applicant's publications and other scientific activities to date (participation in conferences, involvement in research projects, etc.)
- a list of the literature that the applicant has studied in relation to his/her individual interest and the chosen topic of the dissertation project;
- other relevant documents (e.g. proof of having passed a national examination or an internationally recognised certificate in a world language.

Die mündliche Aufnahmeprüfung besteht aus einer Diskussion über das Dissertationsprojekt (max. 10 Punkte), einem Test zur grundlegenden Orientierung im Fachgebiet (max. 5 Punkte) und einem Test der Fremdsprachenkenntnisse (max. 5 Punkte). Im Zulassungsverfahren muss der Kandidat ein ausgeprägtes Forschungsinteresse an zeitgenössischer Geschichte auf tschechischer und europäischer Ebene sowie angemessene Kenntnisse in Theorie und Methodik nachweisen. Die Bewerber bereiten eine mündliche Präsentation ihres Projekts vor, die nicht länger als 10 Minuten dauern darf. Die Fragen des Gesprächs dienen dazu, die Eignung des Bewerbers für das Dissertationsprojekt zu überprüfen und konzentrieren sich insbesondere auf das gewählte Thema des Forschungsprojekts. Bewertet werden sowohl die Qualität des Forschungsprojekts als auch seine Einbindung in die Forschungsprojekte der Fakultät. In der Aufnahmeprüfung können insgesamt 20 Punkte erreicht werden. Ein Kandidat, der bei der Bewertung der Diskussion über das Forschungsprojekt der Dissertation weniger als 5 Punkte erreicht, kann nicht zugelassen werden. Der Dekan legt die Mindestpunktzahl für die Zulassung auf der Grundlage des Ergebnisses des Zulassungsverfahrens und unter Berücksichtigung der wirtschaftlichen und kapazitären Möglichkeiten der Fakultät fest.

Die folgenden Anlagen sind Bestandteil des Bewerbungsformulars:
- Dissertationsprojekt (empfohlene Teile: Skizzierung des Forschungsproblems und der Forschungsfragen, Überblick über den aktuellen Stand der Forschung, Erläuterung der gewählten Methodik und Forschungstechniken, vorgeschlagene Herangehensweise an das Problem, Liste der relevanten Literatur, Zeitplan für die Forschung, Erläuterung der Relevanz des Themas für den Studiengang Zeitgenössische Europäische Kulturgeschichte); der übliche Umfang des Projekts beträgt 10 Seiten; das Projekt muss einen Vorschlag des Betreuers (Name) enthalten, der aus der vom Fachbereichsrat genehmigten Liste der Betreuer ausgewählt wurde, und das Projekt muss gemeinsam mit dem Betreuer entwickelt werden;
- ein schriftliches Einverständnis des Betreuers, das Dissertationsprojekt zu betreuen, das dem Bewerbungsformular als separate Anlage beigefügt wird;
- ein kurzer beruflicher Lebenslauf;
- eine Übersicht über die bisherigen Veröffentlichungen und sonstigen wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten des Bewerbers (Teilnahme an Konferenzen, Beteiligung an Forschungsprojekten usw.)
- eine Liste der Literatur, die der Bewerber in Bezug auf sein persönliches Interesse und das gewählte Thema des Dissertationsprojekts studiert hat;
- sonstige einschlägige Unterlagen (z. B. Nachweis über das Bestehen einer nationalen Prüfung oder eines international anerkannten Zertifikats in einer Weltsprache.

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study programme.

Voraussetzung für die Zulassung zum Promotionsstudium ist der ordnungsgemäße Abschluss des Masterstudiums.

Graduates of the Contemporary European Cultural History programme are experts with a thorough, state-of-the-art theoretical and methodological knowledge of both European and Czech history, and particularly the history of the last one hundred years. Potential PhD topics, not least with regard to the Master programmes in European Cultural and Intellectual History, resp. Oral History – Contemporary History, will deal with the Cultural, Social, Intellectual, Political, and Everyday History of Europe since the end of World War I as well as the complex history of the Czechoslovak Republic, resp. the Czech lands, in a European context. They are trained for independent scientific research in relevant fields of their specialization, and their professional competence can be applied in academic spheres both abroad and at home. Graduates are able to readily and knowledgeably grasp the workings of the academic world. They are well prepared for positions in EU political and cultural institutions, state administration and the public sector (i.e. NGO’s or governmental organizations, and the media).

Der Absolvent des PhD-Studiengangs in zeitgenössischer europäischer Kulturgeschichte verfügt über ein breites und tiefes Wissen über die moderne Kulturgeschichte, die Methodik, die Techniken und die Methodologie der historischen Arbeit, die für das Studium der Geschichte in der Zeit nach 1918 relevant sind. Er/sie vergleicht und bewertet verschiedene theoretische Ansätze, Forschungsmethoden und -techniken, wertet Quellenmaterial und neue Tendenzen im aktuellen Diskurs der Literatur im europäischen und internationalen Kontext aus, reflektiert Entwicklungen und identifiziert die neuesten Trends auf dem Gebiet.
Die Absolventen des Fachs finden, gestützt auf die während des Promotionsstudiums erworbenen Kompetenzen, in der Regel eine Anstellung als Wissenschaftler in einem breiten Spektrum historisch orientierter Bereiche, sie können aber auch auf höheren Regierungsebenen, in europäischen oder internationalen Strukturen, in Bildungs- und Kultureinrichtungen, im öffentlichen Sektor (NRO und Regierungsorganisationen) und in den Medien tätig werden.
