The PhD study programme Music theory and education is set to prepare future scientific staff who will be able to work independently on their creative and scientific work in the area of music education and music theory. The study programme is to systematically deepen the knowledge in the area of interest, provides results of music education/pedagogy and music and science research, including the current trends in music education which should develop specific musical competence to begin independent scientific work in the field. The study programme provides a scientific framework for the area of research in music pedagogy in compliance with music theory.
Program without specialization.
Candidates should have already completed their master's in music education (or a combination of instrument specialization or choir leader specialization). The entrance exam is focused mainly on the depth of knowledge and skills necessary for successful completion of the Ph.D. Study programmer according to the selected specialization and regarding the thesis topic.
As part of the admission procedure, applicants to the Music Theory and Education programme are required to attach to their application the consent of their supervisor to supervise the PhD student. Therefore, applicants are advised to contact the chair of the departmental board, Prof. Michal Nedelka, PhD, well in advance of submitting their application for studies with a prepared dissertation topic. The Chair will inform them which supervisors are dealing with the relevant topics or related topics and provide them with the contact details of the supervisors concerned. The candidate will then arrange an online or in-person consultation with the potential supervisor to present their research plan. If the supervisor agrees to supervise the candidate, the candidate will provide the supervisor with an official Supervisor Consent Form. The supervisor will sign it manually or with a certified electronic signature and provide it to the candidate. Entrance exam:
The prerequisites for scientific work in the field are verified by a debate on the submitted project. The project of up to 10 pages on the topic chosen by the candidate should contain a description and current state of the research problem, a basic idea of the aim and structure of the dissertation, the methods of research work considered and a review of the literature that is crucial for the solution of the topic and which the candidate used in the preparation of the project. In the discussion, the candidate will explain his/her own experience in dealing with the proposed problem or a similar problem, demonstrate his/her knowledge of the current state of the problem and support it with a description of relevant results, and demonstrate his/her knowledge of the literature he/she cites as decisive sources in the project (the content of publications and their relevance to the candidate's own research plan), demonstrate their knowledge of the methodology they intend to use to address their research project, and subject their research project to a SWOT analysis outlining a timetable for addressing the research project with a time reserve resulting from the defined risks.
Full completion of a master's degree programme in a similar field is a prerequisite for admission. The doctoral study programme builds on the study programme Teaching for Secondary Schools, Teaching of General Education Subjects for Primary and Secondary Schools - Music Education, Teaching of General Education Subjects for Primary and Secondary Schools - Instrument Playing, Teaching of General Education Subjects for Primary and Secondary Schools - Choirmastering, Music Science, Musicology, Aesthetics, Music Theory and Music Art.
Evaluation Criteria: In order to be admitted to full-time study, an applicant must obtain the minimum number of points for successful completion of the entrance examination and at the same time obtain the minimum number of points required for admission. The minimum number of points for admission to individual study programmes is determined by the Dean on the basis of the results of the entrance examinations, taking into account the expected number of admitted applicants and the economic and capacity possibilities of the faculty. The minimum number of points for successful completion of the entrance examination for full-time and combined forms is set at 7 out of 10 points.
Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study programme.
