      Pharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs on the function of living organisms. As a science, pharmacology explores mechanism of actions of drugs and adverse effects on organisms, human or others. A research can be performed on a level of the whole body, organs, tissues, cells or on molecular level. Pharmacology is multidisciplinary science, various compartments exist as neuro-, immunopharmacology, toxicology etc. together with other fields of biomedicine (pharmacogenetics/genomics, -epidemiology, biopharmaceuticals). A principal goal of research is to identify and apply new scientific data and protocols for targeted, individualized and economically acceptable pharmacotherapy and for prevention and diagnostics of human diseases.
      Mainly knowledge of physiology, bio/chemistry, pathology or physics etc. is a prerequisite of PhD studies of Medical Pharmacology.
      Scientific approach with own experimental work are bases of a study in pre-clinical or clinical field. Research on subcellular or cellular levels is performed with use of current, internationally accepted methods. Also new methodology, models for evaluation of biological activity of compounds can be developed and new, pharmacologically active compounds can be revealed.
      Despite the fact that Pharmacology is categorized as theoretical subject in medical education, knowledge of pharmacology in clinical practice is necessary in almost all medical specializations on daily basis. PhD study is suitable for physicians, pharmacists, chemists and other graduated in biomedical science.

      The entrance examination takes the form of an interview in which professional and language skills are examined
      primarily as well as the readiness of candidates for independent scientific work in the chosen field.
      Interviews comprise of:
      1. English language (0-20 points)
      2. Specialized topic (0-40 points)
      3. Examination from the field (0-30 points)
      4. Publications, lectures (0-10 points)

      Passing of an entrance interview with at least 70 points.

      Medical Pharmacology program includes a study of the effects of drugs/compounds on living organisms. The goal of work is to study not yet revealed aspects of pharmacology, as mechanism of action and all consequences related to body, adverse effects and drug interactions. The aim of research is to improve and individualize recent pharmacotherapy, to predict adverse effects and drug interactions; to suggest or develop new strategy of treatment (dose-response, new combinatory protocols) or to search for new molecules for drug development.
      During studies, scientific approach with own experimental work will be realized. PhD student is trained in principles of scientific work. He/she is able to find and work with professional literature and IT information, and on the base of that to formulate own questions and hypotheses, to suggest optimal methodological approaches for verifying of ideas. The PhD graduate will be able to produce his own research results, to summarize the results of own scientific work and to analyze them statistically. He/she is able to communicate with team(s) of other professionals and broad public as well, to present own results at national or international conferences (oral and poster presentation) and to write manuscripts. It is expected that achieved knowledge and further refining of critical thinking will be used in future work, either in basic or in applied research.
