The Jewish studies doctoral program has a standard study period of four years and prepares students for independent academic research and independent creative activities in the field of Jewish studies. The study program will allow for the students’ professional specialization on the basis of their individual study plan.

The study program develops the intellectual heritage of Judaism and applies it to the current religious situation of Judaism.

The subjects of the program are Jewish history and culture, synagogue liturgy, Jewish religious philosophy, rabbinical literature, reading and interpreting selected texts of the Babylonian Talmud, and Hebrew rabbinical texts. The aim of the study is the academic preparation of first-rate experts capable of independent academic work in the field of Jewish studies. The program is not defined nationally or confessionally, but interprets Judaism as a religious phenomenon in historical and theological contexts with overlaps with current problematics. Knowledge of the spiritual values of Judaism will enable graduates to gain a deeper understanding of Christianity, especially its ethics and the Judeo-Christian foundations of European civilization.
