      Content, subject matter of entrance examination
      1. Discussion of submitted proposal for PhD dissertation: 0–30 points
      2. Assessment of the applicant’s previous studies, research, and other academic activities: 0–15 points
      3. Assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of secondary literature (based on the list submitted by the applicant): 0–15 points

      The Subject Area Board does not propose or require particular PhD topics, but research projects should fall within the research areas of the Institute of Greek and Latin Studies. Applicants must propose research projects according to their personal preferences in the field of Latin Linguistics, Ancient Greek Linguistics, or Ancient Greek Literature.

      An applicant can only be admitted if they submitted a proof of their language competence for study in the respective programme, are awarded a minimum of 30 points in the entrance examination and, at the same time, score enough points to place among the expected number of students admitted to the respective programme of study (see the admissions procedure requirements applicable to the individual programmes of study); admissions will be granted to all applicants who score the same number of points as the applicant who comes in last place in the ranking of admissions. Please note that different expected numbers of admissions apply to full-time and combined forms of study. Applicants cannot be admitted without submitting evidence of their prior education no later than on the enrolment day (refer to 5.4 hereof).

      Graduates from the Ph.D. programme in Classical Philology are experts in classical languages / ancient literature, capable of developing their knowledge in a creative manner. Their dissertation theses testify to the graduates’ excellent expertise in the specialization of their choice within classical philology (Greek/Latin language, Greek/ Roman literature), including a reliable grounding in literary or linguistic theories. Graduates are equipped with knowledge, methods and language skills essential for independent research careers, being able to present their research findings at conferences, in journals, monographs and editions of ancient texts. Graduates can seek employment as researchers and university teachers, editors and translators of specialist publications.
