The Master’s programme in Gender Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University, offers a rigorous and interdisciplinary academic framework for the systematic study of gender. The programme equips students with theoretical and methodological tools for analysing gender issues from historical, cultural, and ethnic perspectives. It applies intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches to gender as a fundamental organising principle of human society and culture.
The curriculum focuses on both historical and contemporary manifestations of gender order, the impact of feminist and queer theories and methodologies in academic research, and the interrelation of gender with other categories of social differentiation and stratification, such as race and ethnicity, social status, age, sexuality, and disability.
A distinctive strength of the Gender Studies programme at the Faculty of Humanities is its internationally recognised expertise in the analysis and critical reflection of post-socialist experiences. Particular attention is given to the gendered structures of late-socialist Czechoslovak society and East European societies more broadly.
The programme is open to students from around the world. The Faculty of Humanities, located in Prague, is committed to principles of non-discrimination and equity, and welcomes applicants of all nationalities, ethnicities, cultural and social backgrounds, ages, and genders.

The programme is offered without formal specialisation.

The language of instruction is English.

During the admission process, candidates must fulfil two conditions: they must obtain at least the minimum number of points based on the assessment of submitted documents, demonstrating both academic and linguistic competence, and they must provide valid proof of previous education.

      1) By February 28th, 2026, applicants must submit a motivation letter (500 to 700 words), a structured curriculum vitae, proof of English proficiency at min. B2 level, and an academic text in English. The text should be between 4,500 and 5,000 words long and must adhere to the standards of academic writing; the bibliography does not count towards the overall word count. The academic text may be a defended Bachelor’s thesis or its summary, an article published in an academic journal, or any new essay in which the applicant decides to demonstrate their academic expertise; it must be written by the applicant only – co-authorship is not permitted. The required documents should demonstrate the applicants’ abilities, knowledge and skills for studies in the Gender Studies programme at the Master’s level. All of the abovementioned documents are a mandatory annex for assessment in the admission procedure.

In the first stage of the admission procedure, applicants can obtain between 0 and 15 points:
      a) 0 to 5 points for the motivation letter,
      b) 0 to 10 points for the academic text.
The curriculum vitae and proof of English proficiency are not subject to evaluation.

The Dean determines the minimum point threshold for admission, taking into account the number of applicants and the operational capacity of the Faculty of Humanities.
Applicants who fail to meet either of the two conditions will receive a decision of non-acceptance. Applicants who meet both conditions will be issued a letter of acceptance.

      2) The second condition of the admission process is the submission of proof of previous education, i.e., a copy of the applicant’s Bachelor’s or Master’s diploma and its supplement(s). The deadline for providing the abovementioned proof is set to September 30th, 2026. Applicants who have completed their previous higher education at a foreign university must submit one of the following documents to prove their previous education: a document issued pursuant to Sections 89 and 90 of the Higher Education Act proving general recognition of foreign higher education in the Czech Republic (i.e. general nostrification); or a foreign document concerning foreign higher education if it is deemed automatically equivalent in the Czech Republic by its international agreements without any further administrative procedures (namely a higher education diploma from Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, or Slovenia); or a foreign document concerning foreign higher education to be assessed by the Faculty (for a fee of 990 CZK). The verification period for fulfilling graduation requirements is set for October 22nd, 2026; this date applies to applicants who completed their studies in a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme during the autumn term, in accordance of Section 48(1), third sentence, of the Higher Education Act; or the applicants proves the condition of completion of any study programme pursuant to Section 48(5) of the Higher Education Act.

Detailed information regarding the method of proving the previous education, whether Bachelor’s or Master’s, can be found at the Faculty’s website: https://fhs.cuni.cz/FHSENG-912.html.

The M.A. programme in Gender Studies is conceptualized explicitly so that the students of this field obtain knowledge and skills and deepen their understanding of gender constructions and principles functioning in society. The students should be able to critically and in complex ways evaluate the roles and meanings of these constructions in the overall organization of society. Furthermore, they should be able to assess and analyze the consequences of the gender roles, constructions, and stereotypes for both contemporary and historical positions of women and men in society. The goal of the programme is to familiarize the students with gender analysis in diverse academic fields and practical areas of social life in order to get them ready for professional careers in a wide range of professional fields, including state administration, social policy, social and medical care, social and legal work, education and academic work.
Graduates of the M.A. programme in Gender Studies will find their careers in state and non-governmental organizations, especially in national and international institutions and organizations concerned with social questions, family matters, domestic and public violence, human rights and equal opportunities, development of civil society, sustainable development, labor law, and others. In their work, individual, teamwork, or leading roles, as mediators of conflict resolution, in research, education, planning, and applying methods of social change, graduates of the programme will be able to inspire advanced gender sensibility and use applied gender analysis with gender-differentiated attitudes. They can contribute to so-called "gender mainstreaming”, i.e. integrating gender-differentiated perspectives and principles into society's fundamental social-political and cultural structures. The graduates will be able to develop and cultivate principles and an environment of social justice in the broad sense of the term, support gender balance, equality, and human and civil rights to difference and gender and sexual autonomy. Graduates of the programme will also be able to find their careers in theoretical and pedagogical teams in academia and thus contribute to developing and broadening gender studies on an interdisciplinary level in both research and teaching.
