| The course is designed as an interdisciplinary two-semester study in two modules: Module I covers the winter semester and focuses on private law, Module II takes place in the summer semester and focuses on public law. The course is related to the modules Introduction to Czech Law I - Private Law and Introduction to Czech Law II - Public Law. The aim is for translators of legal texts to acquire practical translation skills specific to legal translation. The content is based on, or related to, individual branches of law. Each module consists of 14 three-hour translation seminars, supported by detailed handouts and other materials. Their purpose is to present, through legal-linguistic comparison and conceptual analysis, the possibilities of translating not only specifically Czech legal institutions into a foreign language (English, or Fench or German or Russian), but also the possibilities of approaching the translation of legal realia of other legal systems into Czech. |

| The purpose of organizing the complementary study course is to contribute to the improvement of the professional training of court translators and interpreters, to broaden their knowledge of Czech law in the broad sense of the word, which will subsequently increase the quality of the services they provide. The aim of the course is to sufficiently prepare current and future court translators and interpreters, including those who already have a court translator's or court interpreter's licence or intend to apply for one, in such a way that they can perform their services competently and at the highest possible professional level. During their studies, students will acquire basic knowledge of legal terminology and the basics of law in the given language area - English, or German or French or Russian. Emphasis is also placed on legal-linguistic comparison of relevant legal concepts, introduction of the specifics of Czech law and its meaningful translation into a foreign language (i.e. the language of a different legal system). Each module consists of 14 three-hour translation seminars, supported by detailed and interactive handouts and other materials. It is assumed that the teaching will be face-to-face, however, online access (streaming) is envisaged for participants e.g. from abroad. Each module has its own playlist of all seminars accessible to all participants during the whole course. Each module ends with an exam consisting of two parts: (a) translation of a short authentic professional text from the mother tongue into a foreign language and vice versa; the elements monitored are the accuracy of the translation, the adequate use of equivalents of professional terminology and the overall cohesion of the translated text; (b) translation of terminological phrases from all the topics covered (from MJ into CJ and vice versa). The minimum score for passing this exam is 70% of the total score for both parts. Classes are held on Fridays, 15:00 - 17:30 hour. | Knowledge (theoretical/factual): the graduate will acquire basic knowledge of legal translation, its various approaches and the basic principles on which it is based. The graduate is able to analyse a Czech legal text in order to meaningfully translate its content into a foreign language. At the same time, the student is able to identify the meaning of a foreign legal text and translate it into Czech so that it makes the intended sense to a Czech lawyer. Skills (practical/functional): The student can apply the acquired knowledge of Czech and foreign legal terminology. Can search for legal formulations in Czech and foreign legal regulations and correctly match them with formulations used in legal jargon or in particular text types. Competence: The graduate is able to use his/her knowledge and skills in such a way that the output of his/her translation or interpreting activity is a high-quality translation that allows for the most accurate transfer of legal information between the source and target languages and the legal systems. |
