This subject aims to provide a general knowledge of geriatrics and gerontology. Students should obtain knowledge about basic problems and frequent diseases of old age.

The aim of the course is to provide students with a brief overview of the field of geriatrics and gerontology and to highlight the differences in the approach and care of the elderly patient. Students should gain an understanding of the basic problems and the most common diseases of old age. They should also know the benefits and risks of physical activity.

Learning outcomes

Student/Graduate of the course:

- define old age and ageing, describe current demographic trends

- define geriatrics as a medical discipline

- characterise involutional changes in the body

- describe the specificities of morbidity in the elderly

- explain the concept of geriatric syndromes and list geriatric syndromes

- list the most common diseases of the elderly and describe their symptoms and course

- list the specifics and benefits of physical activity and the most common contraindications to physical activity in the elderly

Syllabus

Lectures:

1. Introduction, definition of geriatrics and gerontology. Biological, psychological and social ageing. Demographic trends. Theories of ageing, morbidity, mortality.

2. Somatic evolutional changes in particular organ systems and their influence on physical activity of elderly. Practical experience wearing geronto-dress (simulation of changes in older age).

3. Geriatric medicine. The most important diseases of older age (cardiovascular, metabolic and oncological disorders. Polymorbidity.

4. Geriatric syndromes (nutritional disorders, incontinence, thermoregulation, sleeping disorders, instability, dizziness and falls, pain, pressure ulcers). Impairment of locomotor system.

5. Psychology and psychopathology of older age. Dementia. Gastrointestinal and urogenital diseases.

6. Nutrition in older age and prevention of non-communicable diseases. Physical activity in older age.

7. Specific exercise programs (for incontinence prevention, after joint replacement, in fall prevention etc.). Exercise examples.
