Cílem kurzu je představit vývoj německy psané literatury v období 1820-1890 v souvislosti s politickým, společenským, kulturním i hospodářským vývojem v Evropě. Tématem kurzu je společenská atmosféra v Německu a Rakousku po napoleonských válkách, restaurace, biedermeier, doba předbřeznová, mladoněmecká literární tvorba, specifika německého realismu, německý naturalismus i specifika rakouské a švýcarské literatury v 19. století. Pozornost je věnována dílům významných tvůrčích osobností, vývoji jednotlivých žánrů i sociologickým aspektům literárního vývoje.
