The course is an introduction to the theory of teaching, introduces the basic terminology, orientation in the curricular context and a framework for thinking in the field didactics. It leads students to a professional description of learning situations and to an understanding of teaching methods. It creates prerequisites for follow-up didactic subjects, which will focus on the analysis of strategic teaching models and on the planning and evaluation of teaching.

Students are familiar with the structure of national and school curriculum at the second stage of primary and secondary schools. They use appropriately the basic didactic terminology for describing the learning situation. They explain the way and conditions of implementation of selected teaching strategies and professional reasons for their use.

  1. What is didactics? Definition of didactics. Teaching based on evidence, effective teaching strategies. Traditional didactic principles. E-U-R. Phases of the learning cycle.
  2. Safe environment, mind setting, working with error. Respectful communication.
  3. Attention and memory. Strategies to support student learning. Metacognition.
  4. Motivating students in teaching, praise and criticism.
  5. Classification of organizational forms of teaching. Teaching methods. Management of independent work of students. Cooperative teaching and its implementation, composition of groups, communication in a group.
  6. Communication in teaching, techniques of dialogical teaching. Interpretation and demonstration of skills.
  7. Continuous feedback, formative evaluation.
  8. Diversity of student population.
  9. System and structure of curricular documents in the Czech Republic. Educational content, curriculum, expected outcomes. Key competencies, cross-sectional topics in primary and secondary school curricula.

Completion of the course iis based on the final test result.

The test contains closed and open questions on topics in the range of lectures and the literature. The test verifies the fulfillment of the objective of the course, ie knowledge and understanding of selected didactic categories, orientation in the context of the curriculum at the second stage of primary and secondary schools, understanding of teaching methods and strategies, ability to professionally justify.
