The content of the course is the education during the Classical Ages, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, ..., the 19th and 20th century, especially the development of pedagogical thinking and the pedagogy itself as the scientific sphere. The process of liberalization of education, the status of child in education, the process of "teacher profession creation" and teachers education are discussed. Especial emphasis is given to Komenský and the reform pedagogy.

The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the development of pedagogical way of thinking, namely the thinking of educational institutions and politics surrounding school systems during particular cultural periods. Students will learn to evaluate historical and pedagogical phenomenons and use historical scientific methods of pedagogy.

2. Education in the Middle Ages. Christianity and its influence on education. Scholasticism. Church schools, urban schools, and universities.
3. Education and training in the period of humanism and renaissance.
4. Pedagogy of J. A. Komenský.
5. Pedagogy of the Enlightenment Period. Locke, Rousseau, and Pestalozzi.
6. Pedagogy and education in 19th century. J. F. Herbart. Herbartismus. Froebel, and Lindner.
7. Reform pedagogy. The direction of 20th century pedagogy.

 

Students are expected to produce papers under the tutoring.
