The aim of the course is familiarising students with a broad variety of meaning encoding see mainly from the semantic and pragmatic perspevtive. The main focus is on word meaning. The use of practical everyday examples is emphasised. Topic 1: Types and modes of meaning; Compositionality; Lexical and grammatical meaning; Contextual variability of meaning; Theoretical approaches to lexical meaning Topic 2: Meaning and concept; Mental representations of categories; Prototypes Topic 3: Paradigmatic sense relations; Identity vs opositness Topic 4: Syntagmatic relations; Collocability; Grammatical semantics Topic 5: Extension of meaning; Metaphor, metonymy; Meaning change and shift
