The course aims at introducing and describing the English sound system on the segmental and suprasegmental level. The reference accent is General British. In seminars the students practise the perception and production of selected pronunciation aspects and they develop transcription skills. Topics: basic terminology speech organs and production vowel quality and quantity English consonants allophonic variation aspects of connected speech phonotactics and the English syllable nature and placement of word stress vowel reduction and its role in creating prominence contrasts on the word and sentence level functions of English intonation
