The history of the German language from the 16th century onward will be subject of this course. Special attention will be paid to the following points: History of orthography, vocabulary and syntax, history of the varieties of the German language, especially standard language, technical language and dialects. Language as a medium for orality and literacy will be discussed. The points listed first will be considered from a structural, the other ones from a pragmatic perspective. This course is taught in German.
