The course prepares students to conducting qualitative and quantitative research in education. Students are taught to work independently with data using statistical software Gretl and R. The content of the course is divided into two parts - educational research methods and statistical analysis of data. In the first part, we, for example, discuss characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research, main steps in the research process and selected instruments of data collection. We also focuse on international comparative studies in education (PISA, TIMSS, CIVED etc.). In the second part, students are introduced to the basics of descriptive statistics (frequencies, measures of central tendency and variability, correlation coefficient, graphing data) and inferential statistics (hypotheses testing and linear regression) using selected examples and demonstration of data analyses in statistical software Gretl and R. Students are also introduced how to develop and analyse achievement tests.

Kurz připravuje studenty na samostatné provádění jak kvalitativního, tak kvantitativního výzkumu v pedagogice. Studenti se učí samostatně zpracovávat data pomocí statistických metod v softwarech Gretl a R. Obsah kurzu je rozdělen do dvou částí - metody pedagogického výzkumu a statistická analýza dat. V první části jsou např. diskutovány charakteristiky kvalitativního a kvantitativního výzkumu, hlavní kroky ve výzkumu a vybrané nástroje pro sběr dat. Jsou diskutovány i mezinárodní srovnávací výzkumy v oblasti vzdělávání (PISA, TIMSS, CIVED atd.). V druhé části jsou studenti seznámeni se základy deskriptivní statistiky (četnosti, míry polohy, míry variability, korelační koeficient, grafické znázornění dat) a inferenční statistiky (testování hypotéz a lineární regrese) na vybraných příkladech a s ukázkou zpracování dat v statistických softwarech Gretl a R. Studenti jsou seznámeni i s přípravou a (statistickou) analýzou didaktických testů.

The aim of the course is that students learn to conduct independently qualitative and quantitative research of a selected topic in education and critically evaluate the Czech public sector of education based on their knowledge about international comparative studies in education. Next, they learn to analyze data using selected statistical methods in softwares Gretl and R and statistically analyze achievement tests.

Cílem kurzu je, aby studenti byli schopni samostatně provést kvalitativní a kvantitativní výzkum zvoleného pedagogického tématu a kriticky hodnotit české školství na základě znalosti o mezinárodních srovnávacích výzkumech ve vzdělávání. Dále se naučí analyzovat data pomocí vybraných statistických metod v softwarech Gretl a R a statisticky analyzovat didaktické testy.

Qualitative and quantitative educational research - their characteristics and comparison and the most common types.
Main steps of research process (identifying a research problem, reviewing the literature, selecting participants, collecting data, analyzing and interpreting data, reporting and evaluating research).
Characteristics of a good research topic.
Questionnaire - construction, examples of questionnaires used in educational research.
Observation - example of structured observation a its use in educational research.
Types of attitude scales - Likert, semantic differential and rating scales.
Concept mapping.
International comparative studies in education - organizations conducting these studies, studies TIMSS and PISA and comparison of their goals, testing population and test items, results of Czech students in reading, scientific and mathematical literacy.
Descriptive statistics - frequencies, measures of central tendency and variability, correlation coefficient, graphing data.
Inferential statistics - population, random sample, normal distribution, hypotheses testing, error of the first and second kind, p-value. T-test, F-test, chi-square test and simple linear regression analysis.
Analyzing data using the described methods of descriptive and inferential statistics in free statistical softwares Gretl and R.
Achievement tests - types of achievement tests, types of test items, construction of achievement test, characteristics of test items - difficulty, sensitivity and analysis of distractors, validity and reliability of test - formulas for their computation, test standardization, examples of standardized tests, models for comparison of tests.

Kvalitativní a kvantitativní pedagogický výzkum - jejich charakteristika a porovnání a nejčastěji využívané typy těchto výzkumů.
Vymezení hlavních kroků ve výzkumu (stanovení výzkumného problému, studium literatury, výběr participantů, sběr dat, analyzování a interpretování dat, psaní výzkumné zprávy).
Charakteristika dobrého výzkumného tématu.
Dotazník - jeho kontrukce a příklady dotazníků využívané v pedagogickém výzkumu.
Pozorování - příklad strukturovaného pozorování a jeho využití v pedagogickém výzkumu.
Typy škál pro měření postojů - Likertova, bipolární a hodnotící škála.
Pojmové mapování.
Mezinárodní srovnávací výzkumy ve vzdělávání - organizace pořádající tyto výzkumy, výzkumy TIMSS a PISA a porovnání jejich cílů, testované populace a testových úloh, výsledky českých žáků v čtenářské, přírodovědné a matematické gramotnosti.
