Education has recently been becoming more and more important as a tool of economic prosperity and a vehicle for the maintenance of a cohesive democratic society. With the increase in the perceived importance of education, more emphasis is put on its quality assurance. The aim of the course it to provide an overview of the systems of assessment, monitoring, and evaluation in education: evaluation of education systems, school evaluation, teacher appraisal and appraisal of school leaders, and student assessment. At each of the above-mentioned levels, the differences in the procedures used in different education systems will be discussed, as well as the challenges faced by education systems in developed countries. To complete the course and obtain the ECTS credits, the students will have to: 1) attend at least 70% of the lessons 2) complete the assignments during the course (readings) 3) present a chosen topic or issue in their country and either discuss the challenges faced by their education system or present the issue from a comparative perspective.
