The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the German-written literature of the medieval period, of the period of renaissance, humanism and reformation and of the baroque period. The literary development is viewed in a broad European historical and cultural perspective. A special focus lies on the development of literary genres, topics of literary works and their connections with pagan German and christian traditions, cultural centres and social conditions for creation and reception of literary works.

Cílem kursu je uvést studenty do problematiky německy psané literatury středověku, období renesance, humanismu a reformace a doby barokní. Literární vývoj je přitom vnímán v široce pojatém evropském historickém a kulturním kontextu, pozornost je věnována vývoji literárních žánrů, zpracovávaným látkám a jejich provázanosti s pohanskými germánskými i křesťanskými tradicemi, významným autorským osobnostem a kulturním centrům, nositelům kultury a společenským předpokladům pro vznik a recepci literární tvorby.
