The lecture will give a brief overview of the microworld based on the description of the fundamental experiments and ideas and will describe current applications of the field. It also contains a brief introduction to ideas and methods of the quantum mechanics, but with strongly reduced formal apparatus.

Introduction: The scales of length, time and energy in the world of atoms and nuclei, units used in this field.

Atomic physics: Standard experiments showing insufficiency of the classical description and the necessity of introduction of the quantum mechanics. Elementary introduction to quantum mechanics (the role of probability, wave function, the infinitely deep potential well, the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom). Atoms and molecules in the view of quantum mechanics. Description and explanation of some systems, e.g. laser ...

Nuclear physics: The properties of nuclei, the electromagnetic, strong and weak interaction. The radioactivity, nuclear reactions. The nuclear reactor, production of energy in stars. Applications of the radiation.

Subnuclear physics: The tools for the exploration of the microworld (accelerators and detectors), the zoo of elementary particles. Some regularities bringing order to the "zoo" - the symmetries, the conservation laws. What means the picture language of Feynman graphs. What we understand, what is not clear yet. What is considered by real by current physicist (quarks).

Applications: Analytical methods, tomography, early stages of the Universe.

Student will draw one topic a day before exam. During examination he or she will give a school lesson on that topic with examinator playing a role of pupils.
