The goal of the class colloquially known as “science coffee” is to simultaneously learn how to read, understand, and discuss scientific papers, to stay in touch with developments in the world of theoretical physics and astrophysics, and to develop and maintain cohesion between the students and the faculty. “Science coffee” meets twice per week for 30 minutes. Every meeting typically covers 2-3 items such as new paper from arxiv.org, nature.com or sciencemag.com, new paper by local authors, review of conference participation, or a recent event of general scientific interest.

Předmět neformálně označovaný jako “science coffee” má několik cílů: tříbení schopnosti rychlého přečtení a porozumění vědeckému článku, diskuze vědeckých výsledků, přehled novinek v astrofyzice a teoretické fyzice a pěstování vazeb mezi studenty a zaměstnanci. “Science coffee” se schází dvakrát týdně po dobu 30 minut. Každá schůzka typicky pokryje 2 až 3 položky jako nový článek z arxiv.org, nature.com nebo sciencemag.com, nový článek některého z účastníků, přehled novinek z konferencí nebo jiné zajímavé novinky.

The format of the meeting is different from a more traditional Journal Club in the sense that more emphasis is placed on discussion rather than presentation. When discussing a paper, the point is to give broader context and convey the main argument of a paper, including the discussion of 1-2 main figures. The paper should be critically evaluated to reveal possible inadequacies (incorrect assumptions, missing physical effects, selections effects, misintepretation of the data, etc.).
