History of computer connections. Principles of data communication, time and frequency multiplex, topologies of computer networks. Encoding of information on transmission media. Network architecture, OSI model. Basic network elements: repeaters, bridges and switches, routers and gateways. Local and metropolitan networks, communication over public telephone networks, modem, characteristics of ISDN, ADSL, RS-232, USB. Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, Fibre Channel. Wireless data communication. Selected network protocols: TCP/IP, IPX/SPX. Management and security of computer networks.

The necessary condition of the successful termination of the subject is the successful pass through the examination, i.e. the marking of the examination by the "výborně", "velmi dobře" or "dobře" mark. The examination must be performed within the time period prescribed by the time schedule (harmonogram) of the academic year that corresponds to the date of the subject registration.

The form of the examination is oral; the student expresses his knowledge to two topics. The requirements correspond to the syllabus of the subject in the scope that was presented during the lecture course.

1. History of communication and networking

2. Basics of data communication
Overview of different transfer media, characteristics of data and signals, data representation and encoding. Different methods of data transfer, time and frequency multiplex, channel access methods, switching techniques, network topologies.

3. Network architecture
Network architecture layers, model OSI. Basic active network devices: repeater, bridge, switch, router, and firewall.

4. Local and metropolitan area networks, computer communication over public telephone networks
Dial-up and leased links. Modem, comparison of analog line, ISDN, ADSL.

5. Universal serial communication interfaces
RS-232, USB, IEEE1394.

6. Trasmission standards in LAN
Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, Fibre Channel, wireless communications.

7. Selected transfer protocols
TCP/IP protocol family, IP datagrams, ICMP, TCP and UDP services, connection, sockets.

IP addresses and their allocation, subnets, private networks. Basic services (ARP, BOOTP, DHCP). Domain name space, DNS service. Overview of application layer protocols. IP version 6. Comparison to IPX-SPX (Netware) and NetBeUI.

8. Network management and security.
SMTP management of network devices and resources. Firewall role, virtual private networks. Prevention methods against network attacks.
