Principles of biochemistry - structure and properties of important metabolites (saccharides, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and nucleotides), enzyme catalysis.

Main goal is to familiarize students with structure and properties of the most important biomolecules and foundations of enzyme catalysis.

I. BASIS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

  • chemical bond, organic nomenclature, reactions in organic chemistry, hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon derivatives, important heterocycles)
  • water properties

II. SACCHARIDES AND GLYKOBIOLOGY

  • monosaccharides and disaccharides
  • oligosaccharides and polysaccharides
  • glycoconjugates (proteoglycans, glycoproteins, glycolipids)

III. LIPIDS, BIOMEMBRANES AND TRANSPORT

  • definition, nomenclature, chemical properties and reactions
  • fatty acids
  • storage lipids - triacylglycerols (fat vs. oil), waxes
  • membrane lipids - phospholipids, sphingolipids, galactolipids and sulpholipids
  • eikosanoids (prostaglandins, leukotriens, thromboxans)

IV. NUCLEOTIDES AND NUCLEIC ACIDS
