Kurz se zabývá současnou post-komunistickou částí Evropy a její reintegrací do Evropských struktur v kontextu globalizačních tendencí. Kurz se zabývá jak politickou a ekonomickou transformací, tak utvářením nových etnonacionálních identit a vztahů. Koncepce kurzu má výraznou regionální dimenzi, a to pokud jde o ekonomickou a politickou transformaci I předpokládaných dopadů vstupu kandidátských zemí do EU.
