This course is concerned with the current EU context of regional development and regional policies in the Czech Republic. Since the 1989 fall of the communist regimes, the Czech Republic and the other countries of post-communist Europe are striving to come in terms with issues of political and economic transformation, i.e. the post-communist transformation. The post-communist part of the continent is involved in modernization and reintegration largely orchestrated by the European Union. Nevertheless, the importance of political and economic diversity at regional level is enduring. The course proceeds from a regional viewpoint and will acquaint the student with essential facts of the heritage of the communist past and in particular with issues of the post-1989 regional development in the Czech Republic in the context of the enlarged EU.
There is required an end-course paper of 10-15 pages in English.
