This course is designed to give students a theoretical and practical knowledge of the principles and practice of scientific work, with a particular emphasis on practical aspects of scientific methodology. The main topic of the course are: planning of scientific experiments and observational studies, data processing with help of statistic methods and resampling techniques, interpretation of experimental data, work with scientific literature and with bibliographic databases, presentation of results in written and oral form, scientometry, project-oriented financing of current science, ethical aspects of research work. The course is intended for undergraduates and graduated in Science (mainly in biology) who wish to enter a career in basic research area.

Účelem kurzu je seznámit posluchače se základy obecné i speciální metodologie věd se zvláštním zaměřením na její praktické aspektů - příprava a průběh experimentů a observačních studií, vyhodnocování výsledků pomocí statistických a randomizačních technik, interpretace výsledků, práce s odbornou literaturou a bibliografickými databázemi, presentace výsledků ústní i písemnou formou, scientometrie, grantový systém financování vědy, etické aspekty vědecké práce. Kurz je primárně určen studentům bakalářského, magisterského a doktorandského studia (zvláště biologie), kteří se chtějí v budoucnu věnovat základnímu výzkumu v oblasti přírodních věd .
