The course provides a more in-depth knowledge of soil mechanics and, as such, presumes that the students are already familiar with the concepts thought in Soil mechanics I.
Here, we will explore how the mechanical behaviour of soils can be reproduced through relatively simple models in ways that can be used in engineering practice.
We will understand the most striking differences between saturated and unsaturated soils.
We will then describe the most typical geotechnical problems and tasks, such as the evaluation of the bearing capacity of foundations, the design of retaining walls, and the analysis of slope stability.
Finally, we will explore some methods for soil improvement and slope stabilisation, discussing how they are applied in practice.
The course comprises a number of tutorials and exercises.

A combination of a written final test and/or oral exam will be considered for the final evaluation, also accounting for the content and time compliance of the solved exercises delivered during the course. The exact form of the examination will be agreed with the students during the course.
