Marriage and divorce analysis; rates, life tables, contexts. Fertility analysis - data sources, fertility indicators, age-specific fertility rates, total and completed fertility rates, birth order-specific fertility rates, parity progression ratio, birth interval analysis, standardization applied to fertility rates - Coale indices, marital and extra-marital fertility, differential fertility. Period and cohort perspectives. Abortion analysis - data sources and data quality, induced and spontaneous abortions, abortion ratio, total and age-specific rates, abortion rates according to marital status, abortion order and number of previous abortions or births. Population growth, the net reproduction rate. Models of population structure, stationary nad stable populations, intrinsic rate of growth, the lenght of generation.

Oral exam. Students will answer two questions based on the topics listed in the syllabuses of both courses (Demographic Analysis I and Demographic Analysis II). Credit (successful completion of the final written test and completion of the tasks assigned in the exercise) is a prerequisite for passing the exam.

1)    Nuptiality: terms, definitions, indicators. First marriage and remarriage, minimum first marriage age, first marriage rates of the first and second kind. Primo-nuptiality tables (single and multiple decrement); gross, net. First marriage probability (risk) definition, first marriage probability estimation by a direct or indirect method, table functions. Proxy measures of a primo-nuptiality table (reduced first marriages, rates of the second kind). Seasonality. Differential nuptiality. De facto marriages/cohabitation, registered partnership.

 

2)    Marriage dissolution (divorce, widowhood). Legislation. Crude divorce rate, divorce/marriage ratio, marriage duration-specific rates of the second kind, total divorce rate (cross-sectional), completed divorce rate (cohort). Marriage dissolution tables. Differential divorce rates.

 

3)    Births and fertility rates. Terms: fertility, fecundity, childlessness, infertility. Definitions: Live births, stillbirths, abortions, single or multiple births. Crude birth rate (CBR), General fertility rate (GFR), age-specific fertility rates (ASFR), total fertility rate TFR (cross-sectional), completed fertility rate CFR (cohort). Fertility timing (mean age at childbearing). Coale indices.

 

4)    Fertility by birth order and mother’s marital status. Birth order-specific fertility rates, by age, by marriage duration. Marital and extramarital fertility.  Marital duration specific rates (also by birth order). Age-marital status-specific fertility rates. Premarital conceptions. Mean age at childbearing by birth order. Parity progression ratio. Fertility tables by birth order.

 

5)    Cohort fertility analysis. Differential fertility. Education, occupation, religion, regional differences.

 

6)    Abortion. Definitions: spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), ectopic pregnancy, induced abortion. Legislation and data sources. Indicators: abortion/birth ratios, abortion rates (general, age-specific), total (TAR) and cohort (CAR) abortion rate, mean age at abortion, abortion order, parity progression ratio. Differential abortion rates (marital status, education, previously born children, region). Intrauterine life table. Contraception: hormonal, IUD, other.

 

7)    Reproduction.Crude rate of natural increase/decrease, gross and net reproduction rate. Lotka’s intrinsic rate.

 

8)    Stationary and stable populations. Natality limit. The conditions for stationary and stable populations. The parameters. Age-specific structure of stationary and stable populations when compared with real population.
