Structure of solids and arrangement of molecules in different kinds of materials: ideal crystals, quazicrystals, paracrystals, nanocrystals, amorphous solids, glass, liquid crystals. Materials of imortant properties based on simple inorganic compounds: metal glass, elemetal semiconductors, polar dielectrics (ferroelctrics, pyroelectrics, piezoelectrics, antiferroelectrics, electrects, ferroelastic materials), laser crystals, superconductors, electron and ionic conductors, Mott insulators, binary semicoductors (superlattices based on GaAs, amorphous chalcogenide and halide semiconductors). Relation between structure and physical properties. Crystallochemical design of crystal phases with desired properties.
The course is designed for Master and PhD students.

The course is for chemistry students with focussation on solid compounds and material science

Introduction, particle arrangement in solid compounds from the point of view of position, orientation, periodicity and range of these arrangements in crystalline, quazicrystalline, paracrystalline and amorphous compounds incl. glasses and liquid crystals. (2 hrs)

Moduled structures, quazicrystals, one-, two- and threedimensional quzicrystal lattices, preparation and physical properties (3 hrs)

Liquid crystals, different types of mesophases and its use. Metal glasses, structure of metal crystals and glasses, preparation and physical properties. (1 hr)

Elemetal semiconductors. Explanation of physical base, band structure, photoconductivity, silicon and germanium. (2 hrs)

Special dielectrics. Pyroelectrics, feroelectrics, antiferoelectrics, piezoelectrics, electrets, feroeleasticity. (3 hrs)

Laser crystals (1 hr)

Superconductivity. Explanation of physical base. "High-temerature" superconductors, layered perowskites (3 hrs)

Ionic, electron and metal conductors. Explanation of crystal conductivity. Mott insulators. (1 hr)

Binary semiconductors, superlattices based on GaAs.Explanation of conductivity and photoconductivity. (2 hrs)

Glasses. Theory of glass transition. Halogenide and chalcogenide glasses. Amorphous semiconductors (2 hrs)

Crystallochemical design of phases with desired properties. (1 hr)
