The course follows the course of Protistology and has two main aims: (1) to extend selected subjects of general
protistology, (2) to monitor the current progress of the field.

The first 11 classes will have the form of lectures covering following subjects: protist genomes and their evolution,
the high-level classification of eukaryotes, symbioses, lateral gene transfer, semiautonomous organelles, metabolic
peculiarities, cell cycle, sex, and species concept of protists. The last class will have the form of student
reports followed by general discussion on significant current papers in the field.
