The course includes basic knowledge from about biology of bryophytes and an overview of the system of
bryophytes, liverworts and mosses and their phylogeny. It also deals with the following topics: the development of
bryology as a part of science - an outline of the history , general bryological literature, journals. Methods of studying
bryophytes (classical, experimental), biosystematics. Detailed anatomy and morphology of liverworts, hornworts
and mosses. Ultrastructure, ecological adaptations, ontogeny, evolutionary biology, cytology, cytogenetics,
chemotaxonomy and other branches of the study of bryophytes. Phytogeography of bryophytes - ranges,
distribution, etc. Cultivation of bryophytes. Applied bryology - importance of bryophytes, historical and contemporary
systems - principles, overview. Systematic overview taxonomy - classes, orders and selected families of individual
groups of liverworts, bryophytes and mosses - characteristics, occurrence, distribution and main representatives
with regard to the European flora.
