The one-semester seminar, which is obligatory for students of theology, contains both theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, the presentation will cover the character of the Semitic languages, the development of the script in the area of ​​the ancient Middle East, the place of the biblical text in the surrounding cultures, its Hebrew version and the ancient translations. On several demonstrations, a distinctive style of Old Testament texts will be presented in narrative, poetry, prophetic genre and wisdom literature.

The practical part includes an introduction to Hebrew quadratic script, morphology and key biblical terminology. The aim of the course is not the language knowledge required for qualified reading of Old Testament texts, but a general picture of biblical thinking and expression, or as a basis for a deeper study of the language.

Knowledge of Biblical Hebrew background according to presentations, the ability to read and understand some of verses in Hebrew. Active knowledge of a given vocabulary pensum. The attestation will take the form of an oral discussion of Hebrew background issues and an individual examination of reading, translation and vocabulary.
