The lecture series introduces students to the main tendencies, ideas and traditions of Czech ecclesiastical history in the period from the 16th to the 20th centuries, emphasizing the key points of ecclesiastical history and important figures of the national past in the transformation from the Habsburg access to power to the end of the communist regime.

Written and oral exam. The successful student who gained enough points in written exam will be given one of the following questions -

1. Introduction. Early modern society and its transformations. Religious and cultural transformations.

2. The beginnings of recatholization and its form. Czech Confession. Religious Orders. Cultus of St. John of Nepomuk.

3. Religious conditions at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. From the Czech Confession to Rudolf's Majesty.

4. Religious and spiritual life during the Thirty Years War. Manifestations of Baroque. Personalities of J. A. Comenius and B. Balbin. Earth patriots.

5. Jews in Czech society from the 15th to the 20th century.

6. Enlightenment rationalism. Reforms of Maria Theresa and Joseph II. with an emphasis on religious life.

7. Religious life in the period of national revival. Personalities, trends, manifestations.

8. Catholic modernism and its manifestations in the Czech lands.

9. Political Catholicism at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

10. Religious life and its transformations in the first half of the 20th century.

11. Religious life in the time of nazi totalitarianism. Personalities, trends, manifestations.

12. Religious life in the time of communist totalitarianism. Personalities, trends, manifestations.
