This course is intented for bachelor students of Media Studies. It focuses on the use of academic English in relation to media studies and on the growth of relevant vocabulary, mainly exploring "news" and "current affairs".
Aim of the course -

The aim of this course is to develop the language skills needed for the study at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Student should learn:

- to know and use English in all sorts of communicative situations (personal, abstract, expository, argumentative), inclusive of in academic context

- to deliver a presentation and to engage in a debate on selected topics

- to write a summary and an essay; to use academic style of communication

- basic facts about the current media scene and selected current social issues

The classes will be conducted in English only. Applied method: content-based language teaching, student-centered approach. Students become acquainted with the academic register, specific vocabulary and its content on the basis of selected materials - texts, audio, video. In classes, the emphasis is onmeaningful communication - active exchange of critical dialogues and discussions, own presentations.

Requirements for obtaining the credit:

1) written summary

Total 15%

The summary must contain the following:

- key ideas of the original text (5 points)

- suitable language (vocabulary, grammar, academic style) (5p)

- appropriate structure (5p)

2) participation in a student conference organized in our last two sessions (presentation).

Total 20%.

The following aspects will be assessed:

- clear and faithful rendering of the original material (5p)

- overall attitude and active approach to the audience (5p)

- keeping the time limit (5p)

- language (vocabulary, grammar, academic style) (5p)

3) active participation in class and continual work on home assignments.

Only the home assignmet work is part of the credit requirements (class attendace is not compulsory)

Total 15%

- active contribution to discussions in class, posing and aswerig questions

- analysis of study materials, home assignments (15 p)

4) final credit test focusing on areas covered in class (or by means of self-study based on the materials and tasks provided)

Total 50%

- vocabulary

- academic English

- analysis of a short passage (based on the formal writing criteria that will be covered as part of the course)

- logical fallacies

Apart from in-class participation, all other activities are compulsory (home assignmets, conference, summary, credit test). However, class attendance is strongly recommended.

All these requirements will be covered and further specified throughout the whole semester, so that students may acquire the necessary skills and knowledge.

Syllabus -

We will cover the following areas:

academia, study and career; mainstream media in the US and GB; investigative journalism and creative forms of reporting; alternative media; conspiracy theories; selected figures within current media sphere; selected historical events relevant to media studies; artificial intelligence

each of these areas will comprise of:

- development of relevant vocabulary 

- analysis of study materials (texts, videos)

- introduction of students' own opinion and a discussion in class

ongoing work will focus on the following throughout the whole semester::

- feature of academic style (paraphrase; expressing opinion; selecting appropriate synonym etc.)

- aspects of rhetoric or the process leading up to the production of a text or a speech

- logical fallacies

last two classes will be devoted to a student conference - students in teams will introduce a given topic mimicking a conference speech (a more detailed description of what to expect and do will be provided in class)

Vocabulary will be tested continually through short quizzes.
