The summer term course for bachelor programmes on the upper-intermediate level serves as a non-compulsory preparation course, taking students to the level when they can sign for their mandatory specialized courses, focusing on building vocabulary relevant to students of social sciences, improving grammar knowledge and correct usage, and developing academic skills. The Language Centre offers three types of the course: Mgr Štěpankova's seminars are recommended for students from the Institute of Sociology (ISS) . Mgr Proskova's seminars are recommended for students from the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism (IKSŽ). Mgr Gloverova´s seminars are recommended for students of Czech-German Studies (CNS), the Institute of Political Studies (IPS) and the Institute of International Studies ( IMS).

Various follow-up activities to teach correct pronunciation, to repeatedly use new terms in appropriate contexts, and to remind students of some tricky grammar features. Work with audio/video materials. Grammar rules review for homework, reinforcement of grammar knowledge in class. Introducing academic skills, highlighting formal register and advanced discourse markers.

During the classes we adopt communicative approach towards foreign language learning and employ various methods and techniques, ranging from teacher’s instruction to discovery technique when students themselves find out the grammar rules or try to form new words from the root ones. Also, the multiple intelligence theory is used which can cater for the needs of all types of learners (audiovisual, kinesthetic, spatial intelligence etc.).

Průběžné sledování aktuálních zpráv v angličtině a písemné shrnutí vybrané události do každé hodiny. Pestrá škála navazujících aktivit v semináři - upevní správnou výslovnost, umožní opakované aktivní použití nových výrazů v odpovídajícím kontextu a připomene pokročilejší gramatické a stylistické jevy. Práce s video/audio materiály ve dvojicích či skupinách. Svižné zopakování obtížnější gramatiky - gramatická remediální cvičení většinou formou samostudia, kontrola a upevnění v následujícím semináři. Základní akademické dovednosti - formální jazykový registr a aktivní používání pokročilejších spojovacích výrazů v písemném i ústním projevu.

V semináři se klade důraz na rozvoj komunikačních schopností studentů, znalostí relevantní gramatiky a slovní zásoby. K tomu se používá jak klasický výklad látky učitelem, tak i tzv. discovery technique, tedy objevování gramatických pravidel a tvoření odvozenin samotnými studenty. Také se vychází z teorie multiple intelligences, která nabízí podnětná cvičení pro všechny typy studentů (s audiovizuální pamětí, prostorovou pamětí atd.).

THE CREDITS REQUIREMENTS:
1. To obtain the credits, students are required to prepare for seminars, actively participate in lessons, and pass frequent vocabulary and grammar quizzes - 10 points.
2. Students must give one oral presentation in class. It is the students' responsibility to suggest their topic and enter it in the chart-planner in the shared document, send the presentation and an audio-rehearsal to the teacher two days in advance in an electronic form, and deliver the presentation in the seminar, following the given guidelines and recommendations - 10 points.
3. The final consolidation test covers the course material of both terms - 80 minutes, 80 points.
GRADING:
A (excellent) = 91 % and more
B (very good) = 81-90 %
C (good) = 71-80 %
D (satisfactory) = 61-70 %
E (sufficient) = 51-60 %
F (fail) = 0-50 %

In our language courses, attendance records are kept, and once you enroll, you will be expected to attend classes regularly (please note that only three absences a term are tolerated). If a student misses more than three lessons, he/she is required to contact his/her teacher via e-mail, phone or personally during the consultation hours.

I. Attendance in class is mandatory. Please note that only three absences a term are tolerated. Attendance will be taken in class. If a student misses more than four lessons, he/she is required to contact his/her teacher during the consultation hours or via e-mail and agree on extra work.
II. Students are asked to prepare a debate in a group of min. 3 students, provide at least three sources containing information relevant to the selected topic and send a worksheet ( containing a- key words b- key information c- recommended study materials) with processed information and sources one week in advance to their teacher for approval. After being approved the teacher will send such materials to the rest of the students of the relevant seminar group so they can study the information and be prepared for the upcoming debate. The debating group will also prepare a knowledge quiz based on the facts contained in the approved materials (10 questions) and the students in the seminar group with the highest score will get the opportunity to gain bonus points. Following the debate the students of the debating group will create a vocabulary list which after having it approved by the teacher will post on Quizlet and send a link to the teacher. Each member of the debating group will be asked to prepare his/her self-assessment and send it to his/her teacher. The panel discussion will take place during a seminar. No debate after the end of the summer term will be accepted. Each student is assessed as a part of the team. The total of points is 15.
Groups of students will sign up for a certain date in person at the beginning of the summer term or during office hours. Debates are scheduled to commence at the beginning of March.

III. A midterm test (45 points, 60 minutes, one attempt)
IV.and a final complex test, checking lexical and grammatical items covered during the term (45 points, 60 minutes, one attempt).
Overall assessment will include an interview with a student. Such interview will be based on materials delivered by the student, i.e news overview, and progress made by an individual student over the past two terms. Complex test can be taken only after fulfillment of all requirements by the student i.e. regular attendance ( tolerance of three absences), debate, midterm test, news overview, and particapation in the conference.
V. Students will write an argumentative essay (300-350 words) after the completion of the complex test. Total number of points:10. Students have one attempt to write the essay.

VI. Preparation of News Overview. Structure: each week of winter term one set of news (students will provide the video or article link), 5 key words (plus recording of correct pronunciation of the selected terms) and a brief summary (3-5 sentences). To give you an idea what such overview should look like, please go to Soubory. Deadline: one week prior to the Complex Test.
VII.
Individual groups will prepare a 12-minute presentation/talk in a format as per their preference in order to participate in a “Great leaders and their legacies conference“. The conference is scheduled for the end of the summer term and each group is asked to prepare a brief abstract (200 words) which will be included in the conference handbook. Related materials need to be sent to a teacher one week prior to the conference.

Mini-prezentace - povinností studenta je navrhnout téma, zapsat do harmonogramu ve sdíleném dokumentu, dva dny předem prezentaci zaslat v elektronické a audio formě, a v souladu se všemi pokyny a doporučeními přednést v semináři - 10 bodů.
Pravidelné kratší kontrolní testy - 10 bodů.
Písemný konsolidační test na konci LS ověřující látku z obou semestrů, poslech s porozuměním a kratší formální písemný útvar - 80 bodů.

Podmínky k úspěšnému složení klasifikovaného zápočtu:
I. Pravidelná účast na seminářích - tolerance tří absencí za semestr. Při delší či častější nepřítomnosti je třeba kontaktovat vyučující (e-mailem) a dohodnout se na dodatečné práci.
II. Příprava a provedení debaty - ústní zkouška (v průběhu semestru)
Studenti ve skupině 3-4 účastníků připraví debatní otázku, vyhledají minimálně tři zdroje s informacemi týkajícími se zvoleného tématu a následně pošlou pracovní list se zpracovanými informacemi a zdroji s týdenním předstihem vyučující. Vyučující po posouzení jejich relevance rozešle materiály ostatním studentům z dané paralelky, aby se mohli na debatu připravit. Před samotnou debatou bude mít skupina připravený pro zbytek třídy vědomostní kvíz (10 otázek), ve kterém ti, kdo si materiály předem prostudují a budou znát nejvíc odpovědí, mohou dostat body navíc. Následně po debatě studenti z debatní skupiny vypracují slovníček, který po schválení vyučující umístí na Quizletu a zašlou na něj vyučující odkaz. Každý student z debatní skupiny vypracuje sebereflexi a zašle ji do týdne po debatě vyučující. Panelová debata proběhne v hodině. Po ukončení semestru NELZE debaty provádět. Každý účastník debaty je hodnocen jako součást týmu - maximální počet bodů 15. Skupina studentů připraví jeden pracovní list pro posluchače, který bude obsahovat následující:
a) klíčová slova či spojení, která jsou použita v debatě b) klíčové informace ke všem zastoupeným postojům
c) doporučené studijní materiály
a pošle pracovní list emailem pedagogovi nejpozději dva dny před debatou. Skupina studentů se zapíše na určité datum osobně na začátku LS nebo v konzultačních hodinách. Debaty začnou během března a studenti se zapíší na určitý termín tak, aby v jedné výukové jednotce byla jedna debata.

III. Semestrální test ověřující osvojení probrané lexikální a gramatické látky přibližně uprostřed semestru (45 bodů, 60 minut, jeden pokus)
a komplexní test ve zkouškovém období (45bodů, 60 minut, jeden pokus).
Součástí celkového hodnocení je osobní pohovor se studentem. Obsahem pohovoru bude diskuze postavená na materiálech dodaných studentem, např. přehled zpráv, a ohlédnutí se za pokrokem, který student udělal v průběhu 2 semestrů. Studenti mají možnost napsat komplexní test po splnění veškerých podmínek, t.j.pravidelná účast na seminářích (tolerance 3 absence), debata, úspěšné splnění testu uprostřed semestru, příprava přehledu zpráva a konference.
IV. Argumentativní esej - studenti po ukončení komplexního testu napíší argumentativní esej v rozsahu 300 - 350 slov. Celkem 10 bodů. Studenti mají jeden pokus.

V. Příprava přehledu zpráv. Struktura: každý týden semestru jedna zpráva (studenti uvedou link na video či článek), soubor 5 klíčových slovíček (student též přiloží vlastní nahrávku správné výslovnosti 5 vybraných klíčových slov) a velmi stručné shrnutí zprávy (rozsah 3-5 vět). Ukázku toho, jak by tento přehled zpráv měl vypadat, naleznete pod SOUBORY. Přehled zpráv je třeba dodat jeden týden před napsáním komplexního testu.
VI. Zkouška se skládá z 7 částí (1- debata, 2- semestrální test, 3 – komplexní test, 4 – argumentativní esej, 5 – pohovor, 6 – příprava zpráv, 7 - Konference), každá část zkoušky je povinná, pokud student neabsolvuje jednu z částí, bude zkouška považována za nesplněnou, i když bude mít ze zbývajících částí dostatek bodů. Pouze 5 částí je bodově hodnoceno. Celkový počet bodů je 130.
VII. Skupina připraví 12 min prezentaci v jakémkoliv formátu (PPT, Prezi…) na závěrečnou konferenci na téma Great leaders and their legacies. Konference proběhne na konci semestru, každá skupina připraví krátkou anotaci (v rozsahu 200 slov) do konferenčního sborníku. Podklady k příspěvku dodají studenti vyučující jeden týden před konferencí.
Po ukončení semestrální výuky nelze prezentace provádět.
V rámci seminářů budou mít studenti možnost získat bonusové body za domácí přípravu, která bude v semináři vyhodnocena.

Vysvětlivky: A - výtečně (vynikající výkon pouze s drobnými chybami), B - velmi dobře (nadprůměrný výkon avšak s určitými chybami), C - dobře (celkově dobrý výkon s řadou výrazných chyb), D - uspokojivě (přijatelný výkon, ale se značnými nedostatky), E - dostatečně (výkon splňuje minimální požadavky), F – nedostatečně, neprospěl (je zapotřebí značné množství další práce).
