This course is designed for students of Economics studying for both a BA degree and an MA degree. A prerequisite for this course is a required minimum knowledge of intermediate to upper-intermediate level so that students are able to read economic articles from the internet or professional journals. The objective of this course is to expand their vocabulary in terms of business and economic collocations, to improve their communication and academic skills and to achieve accuracy in grammatical structures. Moreover, the course aims at bridging the gap between general English and specific English. The students will need the specific language when attending the lectures in English at this faculty, furthermore, while reading professional journals and books that have not been translated into Czech and last but not least in discussions and discourses when expressing their opinions on particular economic topics. Students gradually learn the language of discussions and negotiations .
For capacity reasons priority will be given to the students of IES, followed by other institutes of FSV.

II. Home assignments on a weekly basis (18 points)

III. Summary writing (12 points)

IV. Complex Test (50 points)

All the above parts are compulsory. Tasks I,II and III have to be fulfilled before the examination period starts. The pass level is 70 points. For more detailed information about the individual parts see the below points I.-IV.

I. ORAL EXAMINATION (20 points)

A Podcast OR Pecha Kucha (10 points)

Students will sign up by the end of the 3rd term week for podcast OR Pecha Kucha making teams of 3 students. Podcasts OR Pecha Kucha should cover one of the following topics: ecology, globalisation, inequality, demography, immigration, cultural diversity, or inflation. When having the podcasts/Pecha Kucha completed, the individual teams are asked to save their podcasts/Pecha Kucha  in the shared GOOGLE folder. Deadline: podcasts/Pecha Kucha are to be submitted 3 days prior to the seminar during which the topic is discussed.

Podcast (10-15 minutes)

Students are asked to focus  on a specific issue which they should research and  subsequently carry out an interview with an expert in a specific field (classmate/ lecturer). Students then will report with their teammates on the interview in the podcast (dialogue - all 3 teammates  participating equally). You may get inspired here: https://fsv.cuni.cz/en/study/language-centre/english-economists-podcasts (NB: format differs slightly).

Pecha Kucha

The powerpoint presentation will follow the style of Pecha Kucha, i.e. for every slide there is a time limit of 30 seconds allocated and then the new slide is introduced. For each student the number of slides should be 8, i.e. a total of 24 slides per each team.

II. HOME ASSIGNMENTS (18 points)

When the term commences, students will gain access to their folder on Google drive where they will be asked to submit the following assignments:

1. Prior to each topic-based seminar  (i.e. week 4-10, starting with the topics of ecology and economics) each student is asked to read through an article or watch a video as per the instructions of their teacher OR alternatively selects a podcast and Pecha Kucha presentation provided by their fellow students. Based on the source, each student will write down a) a key message, b) key words (minimum 5) and c) a source and save such in their folder as a Word/Google document under their name and topic. The podcast or Pecha Kucha should also be briefly assessed. Each student should provide assessment of ONE podcast and ONE Pecha Kucha and be ready to discuss ruding the upcoming seminar. Each week - 1 point.

2. After each topic-based seminar  every student will select 10 terms (economic context, relating to the topic). Such terms should be new to the student and do not have to necessarily arise from the seminar (B2 or higher -   level may be verified e.g. at  https://dictionary.cambridge.org/). Subsequently, each student will create his or her own Quizlet set including English definitions. Finally, each student will be asked to create a document which will contain the Quizlet link, and a screenshot of the result of the Quizlet test (70 terms in total) and send such document to his/her teacher prior to the end of the winter term. For more information go to SIS (My Quizlet). Each set of terms - 1 point.

3. After the second and the third seminar (topic of presentation skills and academic English) instead of the above mentioned each student will save in his or her folder screenshots of 5 completed exercises from any of the following 10 sublists (i.e. there should be 2 sets of 5 exercises, each set should cover exercises from 5 different sublists): http://zbenglish.net/sites/voca/AWL/id21.htm (2 x 2 points)

Those home assignments are compulsory for all students. The assignments need to be handed in on weekly basis (not all at once at the end of a term). Those students who fail to submit their home assignment as per the given deadline are not entitled to the points. Those students who prepare either podcast or Pecha Kucha focusing on one of the topics do not have to complete part 1 of the relevant homework.

III. SUMMARY (12 points)

Students will write a summary  (200 +/- 20 words) of an article during the final seminar.
