Update for the academic year 2023-24:
The course is designed primarily for undergraduate students of sociology whose English is at upper intermediate level, i.e. B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (for the level description access EVALUATION OF LANGUAGE SKILLS/ENGLISH at https://fsv.cuni.cz/en/academics/language-centre/useful-links). Classes start in the first week of October 2023.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to sit an entrance test in order to enroll in the course.
WHEN: The test is scheduled for Monday, 18 September 2023; registration via SIS (opens 4 September at 10 a.m., closes 17 September at 8 p.m.), subject JLB099 (students can choose from 3 morning test dates - until capacity is reached/maximum 50 people per test date - 9:30 - 10:10 / 10:20 - 11:00 / 11:10 - 11:50)

Aim of the course -

The aim of the course is to help students to develop their communicative and linguistic competence corresponding to their needs and professional interests, so that they are able to function effectively in the target language environment. Students should be able to demonstrate growth in their ability to listen, speak, read and write clearly using specialised vocabulary that is commonly used within their field of academic study (ideally progressing towards C1/C2-level).

The classes will be conducted in English.

The primary emphasis of the course is on communication. We shall use relevant authentic materials (content-based learning) and work on a range of tasks (task/project-based learning) in groups, pairs or individually. Language and academic skills will be developed mainly through reading field-related articles and academic texts, watching videos, following/listening to lectures and talks, having discussions, and writing summaries; students will be also asked to prepare and present an academic presentation.

END-of-WINTER-SEMESTER ASSESSMENT  

Your end-of-semester results will be based on the CONTINUOUS assessment (i.e. tasks and assignments you submitted/presented during the semester) and FORMAL assessment (i.e. a mid-semester revision test).
Namely:
(i) Quality of your Language Learning Portfolio (the collection of your work submitted throughout the semester)
(ii) Presentation project + written component (draft, peer-review, abstract, final talk, self-assessment)
(iii) Result of a mid-semester revision test (61% = pass line; if a student fails the test, the re-sit date will be offered during the exam period)

Regular attendance and active participation are expected.
All assignments must be submitted/presented on their due dates. Exceptions can be made only in cases of illness or extra compulsory components of the students' degree subject.

OUR 80-minute LANGUAGE CLASS WILL COMPRISE OF:

(i) dealing with social riddles from the sociological landscape (handouts prepared by the teacher) and focusing on chosen skills/areas of academic English,
(ii) working on projects (input from the students),
(iii) sharing experiences and results from the work in groups and reflecting on the work undertaken.
