Prerequisites: Microbiology I, Mandatory courses GENERAL MEDICINE 1st year. Knowledge gained in the Microbiology I course is essential for the students to understand the practical application of the basic principles of microbiology. Understanding basic mechanisms of pathogenesis of the individual microbial agents from the Microbiology I is necessary to successfully follow the clinically oriented topics in this course.

Aim of the course
Last update: Eva Dyntarová (11.09.2023)

1.     The students gain practical skills in differential diagnosis of common infectious diseases and will be able to interpret laboratory results

2.     The students learn basic principles of clinical application of general microbiology

3.      The students will gain basic knowledge of proper antimicrobial therapy in common infectious diseases

Requirements to the exam

Requirements for credit

a) Practical classes

Practical classes are mandatory. Each student is allowed one absence due to relevant reasons, which has to be justified within 48 hours to the group teacher.  In case of more than one justified absences, the sudent has to write a thesis on a topic selected by the teacher and with  5 pages A4 length minimum.

 b) Protocols

Protocols need to be properly written and are part of the credit. The forms for protocols are available on Moodle.

 c) Theoretical knowledge

The students have to pass a credit test on Moodle. There are 30 questions and the minimum for passing is 70% correct answers (80% for the pre-term exams). Each student has two attempts and in case of failing both an essay will be required for the credit.

 d) Practical knowledge

Each student has to pass a practical exam focused on practical knowledge of basic microbiological techniques. The topics for the exam are on Moodle.

 Examination

The students, who received credits for both winter and summer terms, can register for the exam. The final exam is oral. The dates of the exams are available in SIS and Moodle. Students can sign up for a particular date in SIS

It is strictly forbidden to use any personal electronic devices during any type of examination (credit test, final exam). In case the student is caught not obeying these rules, the exam is classified as„Fail“. The same rule applies also when student communicates with others during the testing or preparation for the final exam. The students are not allowed to leave the preparation room after selecting the questions for the final exam.

Lectures

Lectures in the winter term will introduce the topics of clinical microbiology in six areas focusing on pathogens, differential diagnosis and therapy.

1.  Alimentary infections. Viral, bacterial and parasitic infections
2.  Respiratory infections. Influenza. TBC.
3.  Sexually transmitted diseases. Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, HIV, viral hepatitis.
4.  Vector borne infections (tick, mosquitos, louse, heteropter)
5.  Vaccine-preventable infections. Mandatory and recommended vaccination.
6.  Nosocomial infections. Causative agents, symptomatology, diagnostics and therapy of nosocomial infections and infections of blood stream - online

Lecturers:.

  • Prof. MUDr. Pavel Boštík, Ph.D.
  • doc. MUDr. Helena Žemličková, Ph.D.
  • doc. RNDr. Vladimír Buchta, CSc.
  • MUDr. Vlasta Štěpánová, Ph.D.

Practical courses and seminars

Practical courses in the winter term are organised in an interactive manner. The students will discuss with their teachers clinical cases (differential diagnosis, suspected pathogens and therapy). They will also be able to see examples of daily routine in the clinical diagnostic laboratory with selected diagnostic tasks. In addition, two seminar sessions will be held on the topics of 1) infections in the childhood and 2) infections in immunocompromised patients.

1.  Alimentary infections. Interactive case reports.

2.  Urinary tract infections. Interactive case reports.

3.  Respiratory infections. Interacitve case reports.

4.  CNS infections. Interactive case reports.

5.  Sexually transmitted diseases. Interactive case reports.

6.  Infections in children. Newborn sepsis. Trans-placentary transmitted infections. Viral exanthematic diseases. (Seminar)

7.  Skin and tissue infections. Infections of joints and bones. Interactive case report.

8.  Systematic infections. Interactive case reports.

9.  Infections of immunosuppressed patients. Main opportunistic pathogens (bacterial, viral, mycotic and parasitic) in specific groups of immunosuppressed patients. Specifics of diagnostics. (Seminar)   CREDIT TEST.

10. PRACTICAL EXAM. CREDIT.
