The subject aims to understand medical terminology phrases. The winter term is focused on anatomical and essential clinical topics; therefore, we will introduce the structure of basic Latin grammar and the importance of Latin and Greek in international Medical Terminology. Entry requirements: no prerequisites Outcomes: 1. the student gets an overview of the temporary stage of Latin and international medical terminology 2. the student acquires basic practical skills in understanding and forming clinical terms and the diagnoses 3. the student will understand simple clinicopathological diagnoses and anatomical terms in Latin

Requirements for the Credit 

1. As for attendance, it is permitted to miss one practical class. If more, the reason for the absence must be confirmed by an official document.

2. Student has to pass all the micro-tests successfully.

1st test – Units 1 – 2. 

2nd test – Units 1 – 3 and nouns of the 3rd declension from Unit 4.

3rd test – Greek bases I, II. 

3. Student has to successfully pass the Credit test, which consists of Units 1 – 8.  

Students have three chances to pass the credit test. The 1st date during the 10th practical class is obligatory for all students. If a student does not come, he/she fails and loses the 1st chance. 

During the winter examination period, several dates for the 2nd attempt will be posted in the SIS, from which a student can choose. For those who do not pass or do not come for the 2nd attempt, the 3rd attempt will be organized in April and September (students can choose one).

Each student has to sign up for (or cancel) any test in the SIS. 

4. Task completion on Moodle

 

Students can not use electronic devices during seminars (mobile phones, notebooks, clever watches, ear help, and others). If the student breaks this rule in any test, he/she will be evaluated as failed. Student fails the test as well if he/she cheats on the test, and any fraud will be passed to the ethics commission of faculty.

Classes content

1) Introduction to the subject: the importance of Latin Medical Terminology for the study of medicine. Pronunciation and spelling rules. The basis of the system in Latin grammar for nouns concerning other European languages. Unit 1: I. declension nouns. Practice on Terminologia Anatomica and International Classification of Diseases.

2) Unit 2: II. declension nouns. The reading and understanding of anatomical phrases.

3) Unit 3: IV., V. declension.

4) Unit 4: III. declension. 1st test.

5) Review and practice. III. declension.

6) Review – 2nd test. Unit 5 – III. declension nouns.

7) Review and practice. Unit 6 – I. and II. „Greek declension. “ Introduction to clinical and pathological terminology. Greek stems that are used in international medical terminology I. Reading authentic diagnoses. Practice understanding the anatomical phrases.

8) Unit 7 – III. „Greek declension. “ Greek stems used in international medical terminology II. The reading authentic diagnoses.

9) Unit 8 – III. declension adjectives. 3rd test. Review and practice for the credit test.

10) The written credit test. The reading authentic diagnoses.
