Basics of gnathology, masticatory forces, modes of their translation, movement of the lower jaw. Examination in gnathology, diagnostics and therapy of basic disorders.

Prerequisities for the subject Gnathology are all mandatory subjects of the second year of studies and subjects FDP035 Clinical Dentistry I and FDP036 Clinical Dentistry II.

After finishing of this subject, students are able to:

  1. Consider static and dynamic occlusion state.
  2. Examinate temporomandibular joint.
  3. Work with facebow.
  4. Choose correct type of articulator.
  5. Indicate correct type of occlusal splint.
  6. State basic treatment protocol for patient with compromised occlusion.

Lectures

  1. Matter of the subject gnathology. Occlusion (static, dynamic). Basic gnathological terms. (Vavrickova 3)
  2. TMJ anatomy and movements. Chewing cycle. Occlusal forces applied on a tooth. (Vavrickova 3)
  3. Principles of the mutually protected occlusion, unilaterally balanced occlusion, bilaterally balanced occlusion. Basic criteria of the optimally functional occlusion. (Vavrickova 3)
  4. Determinants of the occlusal morphology. (Vavrickova 3)
  5. Articulators. Face-bow. (Vavrickova 3)
  6. Diagnosis and treatment protocol for patient with compromised occlusion. (Vavrickova 3)
  7. Functional analysis of TMJ.  (Vavrickova 3)
  8. Occlusal splints, usage, materials, working procedure, verticalisation, temporary restorations. (Vavrickova 3)
  9. Parafunctions-etiology, classification, clinical approaches. (Vavrickova 3)
  10. Classification of orthodontic anomalies. (Weberova 1)
  11. Prosthodontic treatment for orthodontic anomaly. (Vavrickova 2)
