The main content of the Internal Medicine I course is an introduction to the study of internal medicine, clinical examination of patients, examination methods in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Entry requirements: successful completion of Physiology II. Outcomes (knowledge and clinical skills): Knowledge of the basics of clinical examination of the patient. Knowledge of basic examination methods. Knowledge of diseases of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum.

Participation in seminars and practicals 

No more than two excused absences are allowed; excuses must be sent only in advance by e-mail to the Academic Department of Internal Medicine. In case of a higher number of absences the situation will be delt individually with the Head of the Academic Department of Internal Medicine.

Lectures 

Lectures introduce students to the basics of clinical examination of the patient and part of gastroenterology.

Topics: 

Introduction to the study of internal medicine, significance of internal medicine, etiopathogenic relationships in medicine. Procedures in examination, components of the medical record. Basic examination processes. 

General assessment of the patient 

Examination of the respiratory system 

Examination of the cardiovascular system 

Examination techniques in cardiology 

Examination of the gastrointestinal system and the liver 

Diseases of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum 

Diseases of the gallbladder and pancreas 

Examination of the consciousness, head, neck and locomotor system. 

 

Practicals 

Students will complete 10 practicals which will focus on:  

  • learning the basic clinical examination of a patient 

  • presentation of typical cases to demonstrate the principles of differential diagnosis and therapy 

  • introduction to specialised departments of internal medicine clinics
