Clinical microbiology is currently a dynamically evolving field, with new technologies entering the field, especially proteomic and genomic analyses. Understanding of pathogen-host interactions is also deepening, leading to optimization of anti-infective therapy. It is these dynamics that provide scope for the development of scientific research methods in the field of understanding the pathogenesis of infectious diseases as well as in the development of new microbiological methods. Students will be introduced to the history of the field, currently common approaches, as well as current methodologies and research applications. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to have a basic understanding of medical and clinical microbiology, including molecular-epidemiological analysis of infectious disease agents.
